Milburn Ray Vernor, 86, of Camp Wood, died on June 11, 2017, in Camp Wood. A service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Camp Wood. Carroll Vernor Jr. will officiate and interment will immediately follow at the Camp Wood cemetery. Vernor was born on Dec. 29, 1930, in Camp Wood to Gladys Winifred (Hubble) and Clarence Ross Vernor. The family says Vernor worked odd jobs as a boy; he had a strong work ethic that served him well throughout his life. He served in the U.S. Army, and then became self-employed. According to the family, he often joked that he always thought he wanted to be the boss until he found out that he would be the first one there and the last to leave. The family says his strongest asset was confidence in his own abilities, coupled with a willingness to work long hours; he was always seeking out ways to be more efficient, and he was a generous man who would help others anonymously when possible. Vernor ran businesses in sheet metal manufacturing, concrete, road construction, and oilfield ventures, but the family says his love was ranching; he kidded that he had to do a lot of other things to be able to afford to ranch. Beyond all else, he loved and valued his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gloria Von McDonald Vernor; one son, Robert Ray Vernor; and two brothers, Kenneth Page “Keno” Vernor and Charles Edmund “Ed” Vernor. Vernor is survived by two daughters, Brenda Rae Cable and husband, Christopher Sr., of Montell, and Bonny Elaine Herndon of Uvalde; one son, Anthony Travis “Tony” Vernor of La Pryor; three siblings, Doyle Lynn Vernor and wife, Bea, of Montell, and Carroll Ross Vernor and wife, Ivie, and Nancy Sue Pryse and husband, James, all of Camp Wood; nine grandchildren, Jesse Jerome Baxter, and wife, Maria, Mistie Dawn Kocurek and husband, Trent, Cody Rae Esser and husband, Walter, Victoria Lauren Dühring, and husband, Siegfried, George Ray Herndon, Marjorie Von Herndon, Laramie Ann Vernor, Lexie Sage Vernor and Rankin Colt Bell; one daughter-in-law, Velvet LeAnn Vernor, of D’Hanis; 11 great-grandchildren, Christopher Baxter, Jessica Baxter, Sophie Baxter, Tate Kocurek, Gracie Kocurek, Trenden Kocurek, Trenlie Kocurek, Tresten Kocurek, Kaylea Esser, Emily Esser and Wyatt Esser; and numerous nephews and nieces.
