Gilbert M. Esparza, 55, of Uvalde died on Jan. 9, 2017, at Uvalde Memorial Hospital. A funeral mass will be held today at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with interment to follow at Hillcrest Cemetery. He was born on July 24, 1961, in Uvalde to Josefa (Marin) and Leandro Esparza. He married Maria Garcia on Aug. 30, 1985, in Uvalde. The family says he loved fishing, camping, the outdoors, and trucking. He is survived by his wife of 31 years; parents; mother-in-law, Maria P. Garcia of Uvalde; two daughters, Denika Huerta and husband, Jose, and Deanna Esparza and companion, Pete Sevilla, all of Uvalde; one sister, Leticia Risa of Uvalde; three brothers, Leandro Esparza Jr. and Javier Esparza, both of San Antonio, and Jaime Esparza of Austin; one grandchild, Nyeli Sevilla; two brothers-in-law, Armando Garcia of San Antonio, and Jose Garcia and wife, Irma, of Uvalde; and numerous cousins. Esparza was preceded in death by two brothers, Greg Esparza and Jerry Esparza.
