
Placido A. Fernandez Jr., 72, of Uvalde died on Jan. 25, 2017, at Methodist Stone Oak Hospital in San Antonio. A rosary was recited on Friday, again yesterday, and will be recited again today at 7 p.m. at Rushing- Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A funeral mass will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Uvalde, followed by interment at Hillcrest Cemetery. He was born on Sept. 9, 1944, in Uvalde to Dolores (Almendarez) and Placido Fernandez Sr. He married Susie Sanchez on March 10, 1972, in Uvalde. The family says he was a carpenter by trade for many years; and he loved hunting and fishing, and had a great sense of humor. Fernandez is survived by his wife of 44 years, of Uvalde; four daughters; Rachel Fernandez and fiancé, Pablo Morin, Rebecca Gutierrez and husband, Jose Luis, Reana Fernandez and husband, Jesus Garcia Jr., all of Uvalde, and Roseana Fernandez-Zendejas and husband, Alfredo, of Seattle, Washington; four sisters, Erma Fernandez and Pauline Gaytan, both of Uvalde, Mary Helen Biera and husband, Gilbert, of Castroville, and Rosalinda Fernandez of Brackettville; two brothers, Alberto Fernandez and wife, Henrietta, of D’Hanis, and Carlos Fernandez of Uvalde; seven grandchildren, Erika Jo Gutierrez, Matthew Joseph Gutierrez, George Arturo Juarez, Nayelli Azui Avila, Julianna Jo Gutierrez, Emilian Jesus Garcia, and Elian Antonio David Zendejas; one great-granddaughter, Macie Lynn Gutierrez; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Poala Fernandez; and one brother, Jesus Fernandez. Pallbearers for entering the church will be Matthew Joseph Gutierrez, George Arturo Juarez, Jesus Garcia Jr., Jonathan Garcia, Jose Luis Gutierrez and Alfredo Zendejas. Pallbearers for exiting the church will be Juan Francisco ‘’Paco’’ Alvarado, Jaime A. Martinez, Geronimo ‘’Cala’’ Ruiz, Roman Rodriguez, Osvaldo Castillo and Genaro Luna. Pallbearers for the cemetery will be Juan Antonio Rodriguez, Crescencio Rodriguez, Oscar Garcia, Roy Torres, Beto Garza and J. P. Ybarra. Honorary pallbearers will be Ismael Sosa, Pablo Morin, Emilian Jesus Garcia, Elian Antonio David Zendejas, Tito Vasquez and Pat Phillips.
