Dorothy Sellers Stevens, 88, of Midland, formerly of Uvalde, died on March 4, 2017, in Midland. She was born on Feb. 19, 1929, in Floresville to Artis Barber and William Elbert Sellers. She was the fifth of of seven children born to the couple. She attended schools in Sutherland Springs and graduated from Sutherland Springs High School in May of 1945. She then attended Southwest Texas Teachers’ College (now Texas State University) where she graduated in August of 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education. She met her future husband, Jack William “Jay” Stevens in Floresville. The couple married on May 5, 1951, in Floresville. The couple first resided in Pleasanton where he was employed with the United States Department of Agriculture and she taught and coached students in Poteet. They moved to Pearsall in 1955 where their first son, Randy, was born in September of 1956. The couple then moved to Uvalde where their second son, David, was born in September of 1959. They resided in Uvalde until 2004. Stevens took several years off from teaching after the birth of her sons, but she returned to teaching from the mid-1960s until she retired in 1989. They enjoyed traveling with friends and visiting their grandchildren after retiring; they were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Uvalde and the First Presbyterian Church of Midland. Stevens is survived by two sons, Randy Stevens and wife, Julie, of Midland, and David Stevens and wife, Doris, of Seattle, Washington; five grandchildren, Jordan Stevens and wife, Adrian, of New York, New York, Audrey Stevens of Waco, Reed Stevens and wife, Mary Morgan, Elaine Hardwick and husband, Turner, and William Stevens, all of Dallas; one brother, Leroy Sellers and wife, Julie, of Floresville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
