Eunice Rainwater

Eunice Rainwater, 94, of Quitman, formerly of Uvalde, died on May 12, 2016, in Quitman, after a lengthy illness. She was born on Sept. 7, 1921, near Quitman to Louisa Elizabeth (Wright) and Howard King Rainwater. She attended primary school in Reinhardt and graduated from Quitman High School in 1939. She received her post-secondary education at East Texas Teachers College (now Texas A&M University – Commerce), graduating in 1942; followed by post-graduate studies at the University of Illinois. She retired in 1980 after serving 31 years with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service in Crane, Hardin, and Uvalde counties. She was an active member of the Myrtle Springs Baptist Church and several professional organizations. Rainwater served as a volunteer with the American Cancer Society since 1954, receiving numerous awards for her service to that organization. As part of her work with youth, she received the Meritorious Service Award from the Texas 4-H Volunteer Leaders Association in 1979, and was named Uvaldean of the Year by the Uvalde Chamber of Commerce in 1988. The family says she enjoyed traveling, sewing, playing the domino game forty-two, and spending time with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, William Rainwater; three sisters, Sara Mae McIntosh, Cleon Kennemer and Totsy Forrester; and one nephew, Edward Rainwater. She is survived by one niece, Daphne Huffman of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two nephews, Jay Forrester of Bellaire, and Larry Forrester of Spring; three great nieces; five great nephews; four great-great nieces; and five great-great nephews. Funeral services were held on Monday at 10 a.m. at Myrtle Springs Baptist Church in Quitman, with Fred Morrow and Cody Mize officiating. Interment at Myrtle Springs Cemetery followed. The family received friends on Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Lowe Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Myrtle Springs Cemetery Association, 1055 W. State Hwy. 154, Quitman, TX 75783, or to the charity of one’s choice.
