Jewel Adel Morris, 77, of Orange Grove, formerly of Batesville, died on Nov. 8, 2016, in Mathis. A graveside service will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Edgewood-Woodlawn Cemetery in Batesville. She was born on June 17, 1939, in Batesville to Hattie Jewell (Waldrop) and Clarence Odel Harrod. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one daughter, Catherine Condry. Refugio Hernandez Ojeda, 75, of Uvalde died on Nov. 2, 2016, at his residence. He was born on March 31, 1941, in Mexico to Maria S. (Hernandez) and Facundo Ojeda. He is survived by one daughter, Rebecca Ojeda of Oregon; two sons, Rey Ojeda and wife, Jessica, of Uvalde, and Ricardo Ojeda and wife, Gabby, of Ohio; one sister, Hermelinda Leos of Mexico; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Nema Jean Brunnemann, 80, of Buda, formerly of Uvalde, died on Nov. 14, 2016, in Buda. A celebration of life service is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, at 4 p.m. at the Harrell Funeral Home, located at 1715 Kirby Lane in Kyle. The Rev. Mark Porterfield will officiate. She was born on April 23, 1936, in Black Rock, Arkansas, to Ollie and Ernest Lawson. The family says Brunnemann attended First Methodist Church of Uvalde, and was a successful real estate broker in the Uvalde area for over 40 years. According to the family, she devoted her life to family and nurturing numerous animals; her mission in life was to take care of every animal she possibly could, which was what made her happy. The family says she will be remembered by many for her caring attitude and unconditional love. The family says she loved the outdoors and spending time around rivers in Uvalde, exploring and finding rocks and plants to place around the house. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by two sons, Rod Warner of Uvalde, and Randy Brunnemann and wife, Savannah, of Buda; one daughter, Robin Brunnemann Nalley and husband, David, of Missouri City; six grandchildren, Chase Brunnemann, Chance Brunnemann, Alexa Nalley, Hunter Nalley, Zachery Nalley, and Madison Nalley; and one sister, Lou Murley of Houston. Alberto Vega, 84, of Alpine died on Nov. 9, 2016, at Uvalde Memorial Hospital. He was born on Oct. 3, 1932, in Terlingua to Luciana (Granado) and Thomas Vega. The family says Vega was a veteran of the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Lupe Vega of Alpine; two daughters, Rose Bryant and husband, Pete, of Midland, and Cynthia Holley and husband, Butch, of Uvalde; one son, Henry Vega and wife, Clara, of Alpine; one sister, Herminia Covarrubias and husband, Joe, of Alpine; five brothers, Thomas Vega and wife, Teresa, Romulo Vega, Palemon Vega and wife, Felicita, and Jose Luis Vega and wife, Barbara, all of Alpine, and Chuy Vega of Grand Falls; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Noel Eugene Scott, 82, of Uvalde died on Nov. 14, 2016, at Amistad Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. A visitation will be held today at 3 p.m. at Rushing- Estes-Knowles Mortuary. He was born on Oct. 21, 1934, in Winfield, Kansas, to Margaret (Waldroupe) and Robert Scott. He married Janet Russell in 1977 in Bixby, Oklahoma. He served in the U.S. Army for over 27 years, and the family says he was ranked Master Sergeant-E8 (MSG-E8) when he retired on June 1, 1979. He is survived by his wife of more than 39 years, of Uvalde; two sisters, Norma Troubough of Burden, Kansas, and Nova Buell and husband, Robert, of Willis; one son, Steven Scott of St. Petersburg, Florida; two daughters, Deborah Ragusa and husband, Donald, of Houston, and Julie Scott of Temple Terrace, Florida; three grandchildren, Carlie Ragusa, Maggie Ragusa, and Daniel Ragusa, all of Houston; and four great-grandchildren. Richard E. Shurley

Richard Earl Shurley entered into God’s presence on Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his wife, children, and family. He was the husband of Judith Ann Shurley. They shared over 20 wonderful years together. He was a father to five daughters and five sons-in-law, and grandfather to three grandchildren, who were all blessed by his love, wisdom, and guidance. Richard was born the eldest of two children in Uvalde on Nov. 3, 1946, to Walter Thomas Shurley and Muryle LaVerne Shurley. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education from Texas A&M Kingsville and Master of Science degree from Texas A&I Corpus Christi. He was a professor of automotive mechanics at Del Mar College for over 40 years. Richard was an entrepreneur, mentor, teacher, expert marksmen, archer, gunsmith, craftsman, and fisherman – and more than anything, he was a man of great faith. Richard was also a member of the Grace United Methodist Church. He served as a trustee of the church, Sunday school teacher, leader in the men’s bible study, organizer of the men’s service ministry, and helped in many other ministries. He is survived by beloved wife, Judy Shurley; daughters Belinda Phillips (Bryan Phillips), April Skoruppa, Laura Satrum (Aaron Satrum), Nicki Dooms (Ryan Dooms), Mary Ann Lozano (Omar Lozano); grandchildren Walter Skoruppa, Mark Shurley, and Molly Grace Lozano; sister Sharon Shurley Rose; sister-in-law Patsy Granhold; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Muryle Shurley and father, W. T. Shurley. Funeral services were held yesterday at 11 a.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church, followed by a visitation and luncheon for family and friends. Raul E. Alejandro
Raul E. Alejandro passed away peacefully on Nov. 15, 2016, at his home in Salem, Oregon. Raul was born in Sabinal to Juan and Maria Alejandro on March 11, 1917. As a young man his parents sent Raul to school in Mexico where he learned both languages (English, Spanish). His love for books and maps is evident in the collection he left behind. Raul married Josephina Contreras; they spent 52 years together and went on to have four sons and five daughters. Most of Raul’s adult life, he spent under the hood of a car. Mechanics was a fascination for him. For example, a Chevy motor in a Ford wagon. Raul was preceded in death by his wife, Josephina; sons, Juan, Raul Jr., and Dodo. He is survived by son Albert Alejandro (Pasco); daughters, Ramona Finley (Richland), Amelia Alejandro (Pasco), Lupe Gutierrez (Salem), Margie Corrando (Yakima), Dora Alejandro (Salem); 31 grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren. Those we love can never be more than a thought away. For as long as there is memory, they live on in our hearts.

Warren T. Fulcher

Warren Thomas Fulcher, 68, of Uvalde died on Nov. 21, 2016, in San Antonio. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Rushing- Estes-Knowles Mortuary. The Rev. Ray Melton will officiate. A time of fellowship will immediately follow at the Christian Life Center at First United Methodist Church of Uvalde, located at 301 N. High St. He was born on Aug. 21, 1948, in Stephenville to Christine (Woolf) and Warren G. Fulcher. He married Clara Watkins on Nov. 7, 1971, in Uvalde. Fulcher was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served as an aircraft mechanic from 1971 to 1972. He was stationed at Fort Hood where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal as a sharpshooter. He was employed by the city of Uvalde for 40 years, serving as water superintendent in the utility department; he was also an active volunteer with the Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department for 18 years. According to the family, Fulcher was an avid pilot for 20 years, and he and his wife enjoyed flying to Ruidoso, New Mexico, Mississippi, and all points in Texas. The family says he loved to fish and relished many trips to Lake Amistad in Del Rio, trying to catch elusive bass; and he enjoyed the family cabin at Concan, often bringing friends and family to the Frio River. The family says at heart, he was a family man who enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchild, and nieces and nephews. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, of Uvalde; one daughter, Alicia Hearn and husband, Bobby, of Uvalde; one son, Clint Fulcher and wife, Katy, of Sabinal; one sister, Maggie Young; and one brother, Elton Fulcher, both of San Antonio; six grandchildren, Tayler Hearn and wife, Ali, Ty Hearn, Delaney Fulcher, Ryleigh Fulcher, Aubrey Fulcher, and Hennley Fulcher; one great-granddaughter, Nollie Hearn; and numerous nieces and nephews. Chester D. Funderburg

Chester Dale Funderburg, 86, of Uvalde died on Nov. 20, 2016, at Amistad Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on March 5, 1931, in Sayre, Oklahoma to Ethel (McDonugh) and Evert James Funderburg. He was proceeded in death by his parents; one brother, E. J. Funderburg; and three sisters, Elise Funderburg, Anna Lee Pruet, and Genevice Quinn. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth Funderburg; one stepson, Billy Kingston and wife, Becky, of Uvalde; four daughters, Amber Rogers, Barbara Reed, Rene Kingston, and Brandi Digger; two sisters, Alice Uptergrove, and Wanda Butts; and one brother, James Funderburg, all of Oklahoma; and numerous great-grand children, nieces and nephews. He worked as a labor foreman for Parker Construction Company in Sayre, Oklahoma. He enlisted in the U. S. Army on April 11, 1950, for a duration of three years. He trained in the airborne school, receiving his parachute badge, then entered engineering school and took courses in demolition, at which time he was promoted to sergeant. He married Ruth Gable on May 29, 1964, in Lubbock. The couple resided there for four years before moving to Amarillo, where he worked for the Toledo Scale Company. In 1971, the couple moved to Uvalde and operated C. D.’S Scales on South Getty Street until his retirement in 1996. The family says he received a 25 year commendation from the Toledo Scale Company for his service. After retiring, he owned and managed a pecan grove in Montell, and the family says many people in Uvalde were regular customers for his excellent pecans. A graveside service and interment was held on Nov. 12, 2016, at Hillcrest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family says memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
