Rachel Laverne Bradford, 92, of Uvalde died on Oct. 11, 2016, in San Antonio. She was born on March 28, 1924, in Vance to Lena (Stephenson) and Perry Edgar Burleson. She married Joseph Edward Bradford on Dec. 4, 1942, in Leakey. The family says she was an extraordinary and beloved wife, mother and family member; an old school classy lady; and when it came to common sense she was on the upper end of the totem pole. She was ranch-oriented, knowledgeable about livestock, and a nature lover who enjoyed birdwatching and had many books on the subject. According to the family, she came close to living as long as – and being as tough as – her mother, who was lovingly known as “Maw Burleson.” Bradford is survived by one son, Scott Clay Bradford Sr. of San Antonio; one daughter-in-law, Diane Bradford of Devine; four grandchildren, Celina Luisa Tardugno, Scott Clay Bradford Jr., Brittany Scott, and Zachary Edward Bradford; one great-grandchild, Mia Sarnes; two brothers, Billie James Burleson, and Mickey Joe Burleson, both of Vance; 17 nephews; and seven nieces. Bradford was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Courtney Lane Bradford; four brothers, O.D. Burleson, Robert Edgar Burleson, Woody Lyn Burleson, and David G. Burleson; and six sisters, Dorcas Lola Shoopman, Mary Lou Thomas, Teresa Aline Burleson, Anna Marcelene Bowman, Martha Carol Tumlinson, and Jerry Nell Ward. A graveside service was held on Oct. 21, 2016, at 1 p.m. at the Vance Cemetery. Cody Haynes officiated.
