Jared “Jerry” Randolph Gildart, 82, of Camp Wood died on Dec. 26, 2016, in San Antonio. He was born on Sept. 3, 1934, in Barksdale to Ivie (Howerton) and Fred Gildart. After graduation he joined the U.S. Air Force where he spent the next 20 years as a sentry dog handler, finishing up as an instructor. After his military retirement the family moved to Camp Wood. He operated the Gulf Station in Barksdale and then the station in Camp Wood; he then built the Canyon Auto Parts store and remained there until retirement. The family says he will be remembered for his sense of humor and love of his fellow man; he treated everyone with respect regardless of their station in life. He became a Christian and helped local widows by supplying them with deer meat and firewood. He started a youth organization behind the auto parts store where kids could gather and play pool, watch cable TV and hold dances free of charge. The family says he supplied the Get N Go with a volleyball net and ball for use in the park. Gildart always put family first in all things. According to the family, he taught them to fish, drive, shoot, and change tires; be self reliant and independent, but he was always there to catch them if they fell. Gildart is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Barbara Gildart of Camp Wood; three daughters, Cheryl Gildart of Camp Wood, Cynthia Baete and husband, Charlie, of San Antonio, and Tracy Martin and partner, Noe De La Garza, of Rockport; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Fredrick Gildart of San Antonio, and Joe Cooper and wife, Yvette, of Pipe Creek; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Freddie Lou Gildart; grandparents, Lillie and J.W. Gildart, and Lilly and Bud Howerton. A funeral service was held on Dec. 30, 2016, at 2 p.m at First Baptist Church in Camp Wood, followed by interment at the Barksdale Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Powell, Thomas Powell, John Field, Jared Field, Noe De La Garza, and James Shackelford. Honorary pallbearers were Gorman Hill, Lonny Ray Webb, Milburn Wooldridge, and Alan Elfant.
