Raul F. Torres

Raul “Roy” F. Torres, 72, of Aberdeen, South Dakota, died on Feb. 4, 2017, at his residence. He was born on March 26, 1944, in Uvalde to Feliz R. Flores and Francisco D. Torres Jr. He grew up in Uvalde and attended Sacred Heart Catholic School as well as public schools in Uvalde. The family says he started acquiring knowledge of the sheep shearing business at a young age then moved to Belle Fourche, South Dakota, where he worked for his uncle and others on sheep shearing crews. The family says Torres successfully managed his own sheep shearing crews by the age of 18; his shearing and related work skills were in demand and he travelled with his work crews throughout the Midwest, Southwest, West and Northwest regions of the US., including Canada. According to the family, he was a man of many skills; an entrepreneur in the sheep shearing, farming and construction industries for more than 60 years; and a friendly, kind-hearted person who loved his family. Torres was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Fraternal Order of Eagles club, and attended the Northern State University Wolves basketball games in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The family says he enjoyed watching the San Antonio Spurs NBA games, and the Minnesota Vikings NFL games on television, as well as hunting. He is survived by his wife, Maggie Fischer Torres; and one son, Joseph Roy Fischer and wife, Amber, all of Aberdeen, South Dakota; three daughters, RoiAnn Torres of Sturgis, South Dakota, Raylene Barone and husband, Stephen, of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, and Rynette Torres of Spearfish, South Dakota; six grandchildren; seven sisters, Rosita Galvan of Peoria, Arizona, Rachel Gonzales and husband, Juan, and Rita Mata and husband, David, all of Uvalde, Leticia Gammon and husband, Larry, of Garland, Maria Torres and Josie Torres, both of Sabinal, and Terry Riggs and husband, Jimmy, of Colorado; five brothers, Robert F. Torres and wife, Janelle, of Quincy, Illinois, Jesus Torres, and Arturo Torres and wife, Jean, all of San Antonio, Jose Torres of Sabinal, and Arnulfo Torres and wife, Terry, of Uvalde; and numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Rafaela T. Diaz. A memorial service was held Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home. The Rev. Mark Lichter of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aberdeen, South Dakota, officiated.
