Emma Louise Dean, 77, of Camp Wood died on April 30, 2016, at her home. A viewing will be held tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Chapel of Camp Wood. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Nueces Canyon Church of Christ of Camp Wood. Bill Holloway will officiate. Interment will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery. She was born on Jan. 27, 1939, in Mountain Home to Stella Ellen (Griffin) and Charles Clarence Sherman Sr. Dean earned a master’s degree in elementary education, with a minor in mathematics, from Sul Ross State University in Alpine. She taught in the Nueces Canyon school district for 23 years and in Wink for 13 years. According to the family, teaching was her passion, and she initiated a reading lock-in in both schools and the “kindergarten rodeo” in Wink, working with her students to teach mathematics, reading, and money-handling skills.. She was involved with numerous organizations and programs in her community and schools. During her retirement years, she served as a city councilman, mayor, and municipal judge in Camp Wood. The family says she was a great inspiration to those around her; a mentor who encouraged others to excel; and a Christian with a strong and unwavering faith. She is survived by five children, Lewis Dean and wife, Lavon, of Round Rock, Sharon Robinson and husband, Bill, of Bandera, Karen Dean of Camp Wood, Danny Dean and wife, Karen Marie, of Sabinal, and Riley Dean and wife, Sonia, of Universal City; seven grandchildren; one sister, Rhoda Jones and husband, Harmon, of Uvalde; one brother, Charles Sherman Jr. and wife, Phyllis, of Kerrville; 19 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Riley “Austin” Dean Jr.; parents; three brothers, Henry Clements, Lewis T. Clements, and Frank Sherman; and two sisters, Rebecca Field and Mary Nell Halsell. Pallbearers will be Charlie Jones, Riley Austin Dean III, Sonny Dean, Garrison Dean, Alfred (Pete) Walker, Bubba Hickman, Alfred Williams, and Bill Robinson. Honorary pallbearers will be Milburn Wooldridge, Raymond Nelson, L.A. Field Jr., and Joe Field. Memorial donations may be made to the Camp Wood Library, P.O. Box 138, Camp Wood, Texas 78833.
