Hannah Umphres Castellaw, 78, of Uvalde died on June 8, 2016, in her home after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was born on Oct. 2, 1937, in Winter Haven to Almarene (Cude) and George Dewey Umphres. She was the youngest of four siblings. The family says she married her high school sweetheart, Carl Dee Castellaw, in 1956 in Carrizo Springs. The couple lived in Carrizo Springs, then moved to Uvalde in 1971. Castellaw worked for AT&T and retired in 1991. She dedicated her remaining time to caring for her husband, children and grandchildren. According to the family, she was an avid reader of mystery novels, enjoyed solving puzzles, and her hobbies included vegetable gardening and genealogy. The family says one of Castellaw’s proudest moments was tracing her family’s history back to the original 300 settlers of Texas. Castellaw is survived by two daughters, Suzi Castellaw of Uvalde and Hannah (Missy) Castellaw of San Antonio; two granddaughters, Hannah and Mahala Benton; and one great-granddaughter, Lilly Castellaw. She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Sherry Castellaw-Benton; one sister, Mattie Laura Hester; and two brothers, George Dewey Umphres Jr. and Bill Umphres. A celebration of life service was held at the United Methodist Church in Carrizo Springs yesterday at 1 p.m. followed by interment at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Carrizo Springs.
