Fred G. Peña, 73, of Uvalde died on June 13, 2016, in his home. A vigil and visitation will be held today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Uvalde, and a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. He was born on March 2, 1943, in Crystal City to Concepcíon (Garza) and Morgan Peña. He married Maria Noelia Montemayor on Aug. 1, 1962, in Crystal City. The couple moved to Hampton, Illinois, where he worked as a moulder for the John Deere Foundry. He retired after 31 years, and the couple moved to Uvalde in 1990. The family says Peña spent his retirement years at Uvalde Memorial Golf Course. According to the family, when he wasn’t golfing, he was either out dancing, sitting on his porch listening to music, or talking to and spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his wife; four daughters, Nora Martinez and husband, Ismael, of Austin, Sandra Savala and husband, Steven, of Illinois, and Edna Valenzuela and husband, Ruben, and Diana Peña, all of Iowa; one son, Israel M. Peña, of San Antonio; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Adrian Peña, Pedro Peña, Ruben Peña; and three sisters, Gloria Molina, Francisca Ochoa, and Herminia Montes, all of Illinois. Peña was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Federico Peña; and one sister, Bertha Peña.
