Ruth Sweeten Gray Rawlings, 94, of Camp Wood died on Sept. 8, 2016, in Uvalde. She was born on June 15, 1922, in Real County to Nora (Wall) and Charles W. Sweeten. The family says she was baptized when she was 12 years old, and was a faithful member of the Hill Country Church of Christ. She graduated from Camp Wood High School and then from Draughon’s Business College in Del Rio. The family says she enjoyed a career in bookkeeping and was a high school business teacher during World War II. According to the family, she liked playing bridge, putting together jigsaw puzzles, and spending time with family and friends. She married Jake H. Gray on Dec. 20, 1943, in Uvalde. After his death in 1970, she married Harper Rawlings on March 23, 1974, in Uvalde; he preceded her in death on July 3, 1986. She is survived by two daughters, Karen Collins and husband, Floyd, and Jakelynn Crawford and husband, Rod, all of Camp Wood; six grandchildren, Billy Frank Collins and wife, Christi, of Gail, Jamie McDougald and husband, David, of Iola, Kristi Powers and husband, Brandon, of Camp Wood, Kip Crawford and wife, Kelly, of Austin, Coby Crawford and wife, Sandra, of Colorado, and Kayla Heffington and husband, Sam, of The Woodlands; nine great-grandchildren, Trent Collins, Kassi Collins, Scott McDougald, Kaylee Crawford, Kelsey Crawford, Marin Bennett, Madden Bennett, Ian Crawford, and Jake Crawford; one brother, C. A. Sweeten of Jacksboro; one sister-in-law, Pat Sweeten of Camp Wood; two double cousins, Robin Sweeten of Camp Wood, and Nell Sweeten Vernor of Clute; and numerous nieces and nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; and three brothers, Ray Sweeten, Lewis Sweeten, and George “Chink” Sweeten. Visitation was held Sept. 10, 2016, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Chapel in Camp Wood. A celebration of life was held Sept. 11, 2016, at 3 p.m. at the Hill Country Church of Christ in Camp Wood. Interment followed in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Camp Wood. Pallbearers were Billy F. Collins, David McDougald, Brandon Powers, Kip Crawford, Coby Crawford, Sam Heffington, Trent Collins, and Scott McDougald. Honorary pallbearers were nephews, Eddie Sweeten, Levon Sweeten, Gaylon Sweeten, Jeff Sweeten, Robert Sweeten, Rick Sweeten, and John Sweeten, David Gray, Kenneth Gray, and Les Gray Jr. and Morris Goodwin; and neighbor, Victor Castillo.
