Bill Lee Smith, 68, of Brackettville died on Sept. 8, 2016, at his residence. A memorial graveside service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at La Pryor Cemetery. He was born on Feb. 25, 1948, in Uvalde to Lula Mae (McCullough) and Hal Smith. He is survived by three sons, Bobby McMullin of La Pryor, Bryan Ivy of Fort Worth, and Randy Ivy of Oklahoma; one daughter, Rhonda Vick of Bandera; one sister, Lois Walker of La Pryor; four grandchildren, Haley Fogarty, Ty Ivy, Jason Barajas, and Colby Barajas; two great-grandchildren, Olivia Fogarty and Alyssa Barajas; seven nieces and nephews, Darren Dube, Tracy Dube, Cheryl King, Jason Dube, Eric Dube, Katie Smith, and Milton Smith Jr.; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Smith was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Norma Jean Smith; and one brother, Milton Smith.

Mary Lou Gibson

Mary Lou Gibson, 87, of Uvalde died on Sept. 19, 2016, at her residence. A graveside service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Uvalde Cemetery. She was born on Aug. 10, 1929, in Burnet to Hazel (Howell) and Lloyd Fry. She married Robert Lee Gibson Jr. on Oct. 14, 1946, in Uvalde. The family says Gibson retired from Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District after serving as the first secretary at Dalton School. She then worked at Uvalde Junior High School (now Morales Junior High School) and later became secretary for the superintendent of schools. She later worked as a secretary for the Getty St. Church of Christ for two years before returning to Uvalde Junior High School as a secretary. She was an honorary member of Delta Kappa Gamma. According to the family, “Honey” will be missed by many; they said she was a Godly servant with a heart of gold. Gibson is survived by her husband of almost 70 years, of Uvalde; two daughters, Sharon Snow and Karen Tidwell, both of Uvalde; one brother, Haldon Fry of Uvalde; six grandchildren, Cindy Motley and husband, Jeff, Christy Price and husband, David, Everett Ogburn and wife, Nicole, Glenda Snow, Rollie Snow and wife, Karyn, and Randy Snow; 10 great-grandchildren, Jeyson Price, Kaili Price, Trinity Ogburn, Faith Ogburn, Peyton Motley, and Brianna Snow, Evelyn Snow, Morgan Snow, Allison Snow, and Rollie Snow; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Roland Fry; one sister, Blanche Foster; and one son-in-law, Roy Snow.

Clemencia “Cleme” Pargas of Uvalde, 87, died on Sept. 18, 2016, at Christus Sister Mary Hospice Center in San Antonio. A funeral mass will be held today at 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was born on Sept. 23, 1928, in Blewett to Clemencia (Sotomayor) and Jose Jimenez Castro. She married Mariano Pargas on Oct. 10, 1949, in Uvalde. She is survived by four daughters, Sylvia Muñoz and husband, Johnny, Sally Zamora and husband, Richard, and Rosario Pargas, all of Uvalde, and Victoria Moreno and husband, Albert, of San Antonio; two sons, Mariano Pargas Jr. and wife, Frances, of Uvalde and Jose Pargas of Cotulla; one brother, Hector Castro of Los Angeles, California; one daughter-in-law, Virgina Pargas of San Antonio; 24 grandchildren; 48 greatgrandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one brother, Rodolfo Castro. A rosary was recited on Tuesday and again yesterday at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. Pallbearers will be Johnny Ruiz Jr., Michael Muñoz, Mariano Pargas III, Bobby Ruiz, Brian Garcia, John Eric Muñoz, James Ruiz, Johnny Ruiz III, and Joe Pargas Jr.

Mario C. Salinas

Mario Castillo Salinas, formerly of Uvalde, died in his home on Sept. 15, 2016, in San Antonio. He was 90. Mr. Salinas, son of Randolph and Carmen Smith, was born on May 8, 1926, in Eagle Pass. A proud veteran of the United States Army where he achieved the rank of Sergeant First Class (SFC), Mr. Salinas served with honor in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Mr. Salinas was a kind and loving father and grandfather with a passion for old Westerns and all types of music. Mr. Salinas is survived by his son, Michael Salinas, grandson, Chris Salinas, siblings, Elsie Canales, Rodolfo De La Garza, and Sabino Salinas, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene Salinas, and his daughter, Angie Salinas. A memorial service took place yesterday, Sept. 21, at 3 p.m. at Funeral Caring USA inside Alamo City Christian Church at 6500 North Interstate 35, San Antonio, TX, 78218. Visitation was held from noon to 4 p.m. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mr. Salinas’ life. Mr. Salinas will be laid to rest in a graveside service tomorrow, Sept. 23, 2016, at 10: 45 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1520 Harry Wurzbach, San Antonio, TX, 78209.

Jose Refugio Gonzalez, 94, of Uvalde died on Sept. 20, 2016, in Uvalde. He was born on July 4, 1922, in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico to Maria De Socorro (Saenz) and Porfirio Gonzalez. He is survived by five daughters, Irma G. Perez, Sylvia Corpus, and Norma Flores, all of Uvalde, Ana Julia Gonzalez of Carson, Nevada, and Roxana Soto of San Antonio; four sons, Pedro Gonzalez of San Antonio, Gonzalo Gonzalez of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Ismael Guerrero of Eagle Pass, and Jose Gonzalez of Mission; one brother, Porfirio Gonzales Jr. of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maria Guadalupe Gonzalez; two sons, Porfirio Gonzalez and Juan Hernandez; one daughter, Dora Elia Hernandez; and two brothers. A prayer service was held on Thursday and Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A graveside service was held yesterday at noon at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Arlyene Jonnell Martin, 72, of Camp Wood died on Sept. 21, 2016, at Amistad Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Uvalde. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. She was born on March 15, 1944, in Houston to Eleanor (Fuller) and Richard Prichard. She married Darrell Martin on Nov. 30, 1962, in Houston. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, of Camp Wood; three sons, Troy Martin of Houston, Rodney Martin and wife, Tracey, of New Orleans, Louisiana, and Keith Martin of Houston; and one brother, John Prichard of Dayton.

Teodoro R. ‘’Ted’’ Mendoza Jr., 59, of Uvalde died on Sept. 20, 2016, at Metropolitan Methodist Hospital in San Antonio. A rosary was recited yesterday, and will be recited again today at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A mass of Christian burial will be held tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, followed by interment at Hillcrest Cemetery. He was born on Feb. 6, 1957, in Edinburg to Eusebia (Reyes) and Teodoro T. Mendoza. He is survived by his mother, of Uvalde; three daughters, Selena D. Mendoza and Chelsea Jimenez, both of Uvalde, and Anna Kline of Horseshoe Bay; two sons, Brandon Guerrero of Menard, and Jake Mendoza of Uvalde; two sisters, Sandra Galvan and husband, Jesse, and Lupe Ibarra and husband, Daniel A.; three brothers, Fernando R. Mendoza, Juan Manuel Mendoza and wife, Armandina, and Jose Luis Mendoza and companion, Cynthia Mares, all of Uvalde; three grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Mendoza was preceded in death by his father; one son, Teodoro R. Mendoza III; and one sister, Sylvia Mendoza.

Joy Jean Routh, 85, of Uvalde died on Sept. 20, 2016, at Retama Manor Nursing Center/Victoria South in Victoria. She was born on Aug. 13, 1931, in Mayes County, Oklahoma to Conlelea Floyd. She married Leon Routh on Feb. 17, 1951, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. She worked for Central Power and Light for more than 40 years. She is survived by special friends, Sharon and Ray Coleman of Victoria, formerly of Uvalde, and many members of the Central Power and Light company family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years. A graveside service was held on Thursday at 10 a.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery

Ronald T. Bownds

Ronald Thomas Bownds, 64, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his loving family on Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, at University Hospital in San Antonio. Ron was born to John and Colleen Bownds on July 24, 1952, in Uvalde. He lived and attended school in Utopia, where he graduated from high school in 1970. He attended college at Sul Ross State University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in geology and a minor in criminal justice. He joined the U.S. Army National Guard and served in the military police. In 1973, Ron became a policeman for the Kerrville Police Department, and then later became a Bandera County deputy sheriff. Along with his family, Ron also owned the Mercantile Store in Utopia. In the late 1970s, he worked in the oil and gas industry as a geologist. Ron’s greatest achievement was founding Utopia Bottled Water in 1982, which he owned and operated for 12 years before retiring. However, Ron enjoyed staying busy, and at the time of his death he and his wife owned and operated Utopia River Retreat. Ron was an active Mason achieving the 32nd Degree. He also loved fishing, hunting, and being at home in Utopia on the ranch. Ron is survived by wife, Judy; daughter, Cindy Brightman and son-in-law, Chad; daughter, Vicki Goodenow and son-in-law, Brennen; son, Brandon Bownds and his girlfriend, Kim Kindred; and five grandchildren, Bella, Bode, Gates, Warner, and Piper. He was preceded in death by his father, John; brother, Kirk; and mother, Colleen. Graveside services will be held at Jones Cemetery in Utopia on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016, at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Ron’s honor to the Utopia EMS, P.O. Box 393, Utopia, TX, 78884.

Ruth S. Rawlings

Ruth Sweeten Gray Rawlings, 94, of Camp Wood died on Sept. 8, 2016, in Uvalde. She was born on June 15, 1922, in Real County to Nora (Wall) and Charles W. Sweeten. The family says she was baptized when she was 12 years old, and was a faithful member of the Hill Country Church of Christ. She graduated from Camp Wood High School and then from Draughon’s Business College in Del Rio. The family says she enjoyed a career in bookkeeping and was a high school business teacher during World War II. According to the family, she liked playing bridge, putting together jigsaw puzzles, and spending time with family and friends. She married Jake H. Gray on Dec. 20, 1943, in Uvalde. After his death in 1970, she married Harper Rawlings on March 23, 1974, in Uvalde; he preceded her in death on July 3, 1986. She is survived by two daughters, Karen Collins and husband, Floyd, and Jakelynn Crawford and husband, Rod, all of Camp Wood; six grandchildren, Billy Frank Collins and wife, Christi, of Gail, Jamie McDougald and husband, David, of Iola, Kristi Powers and husband, Brandon, of Camp Wood, Kip Crawford and wife, Kelly, of Austin, Coby Crawford and wife, Sandra, of Colorado, and Kayla Heffington and husband, Sam, of The Woodlands; nine great-grandchildren, Trent Collins, Kassi Collins, Scott McDougald, Kaylee Crawford, Kelsey Crawford, Marin Bennett, Madden Bennett, Ian Crawford, and Jake Crawford; one brother, C. A. Sweeten of Jacksboro; one sister-in-law, Pat Sweeten of Camp Wood; two double cousins, Robin Sweeten of Camp Wood, and Nell Sweeten Vernor of Clute; and numerous nieces and nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; and three brothers, Ray Sweeten, Lewis Sweeten, and George “Chink” Sweeten. Visitation was held Sept. 10, 2016, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Chapel in Camp Wood. A celebration of life was held Sept. 11, 2016, at 3 p.m. at the Hill Country Church of Christ in Camp Wood. Interment followed in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Camp Wood. Pallbearers were Billy F. Collins, David McDougald, Brandon Powers, Kip Crawford, Coby Crawford, Sam Heffington, Trent Collins, and Scott McDougald. Honorary pallbearers were nephews, Eddie Sweeten, Levon Sweeten, Gaylon Sweeten, Jeff Sweeten, Robert Sweeten, Rick Sweeten, and John Sweeten, David Gray, Kenneth Gray, and Les Gray Jr. and Morris Goodwin; and neighbor, Victor Castillo.

William F. Wallace

William Fredrick “Big Rick” Wallace, age 73, of Seguin, passed away on Sept. 22, 2016, after an accident at the family ranch. An open house was held on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Wallace Family Home. A memorial service was held on Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Seguin with the Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating. A reception followed at the Wallace family home. Private interment will be held at a later date at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park. Rick was born on May 3, 1943, in Uvalde to J. C. and Ethel (Graves) Wallace. His parents and two infant daughters preceded him in death. Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Linda Wallace; daughter, Traci Brodbeck and husband, Neal; son, Boyd Wallace and wife, Kim; granddaughters, Morgan Burden and husband, Nick, and Glenn Brodbeck; grandsons, Mickey, Carter and Racer Wallace; brother, Lee Graves Wallace and wife, Shelly; brother-in-law, Ron Boyd and wife Sylvia; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and many friends, especially the David Lutz family. Rick, affectionately known as “Big Rick,” grew up in Houston, spending many summers in the Uvalde area with his aunts and uncles. He met the love of his life, Linda, at a dance in Garner State Park in 1961 – a park built by his father during the CCC Boys (Civilian Conservation Corps) era. Big Rick loved the outdoors and the Frio River; hunting with his family; his University of Texas Longhorns, and was most fond of working on his ranch while admiring his cows and horses. His grandchildren were the light of his life, always setting a Godly example for them as well as others to follow. Big Rick will be remembered for his prayers at family meals, always giving thanks for family, friends, those that had served or were currently serving our military, our local, state, and national leaders, and ending with a special request for 3 inches of rain. His strong belief of family values, generous heart, and affection for overalls will be missed. Honorary pallbearers were Gary Hammon, Bob Covington, Michael Stevens, Bob Siddons and David Lutz. Memorial contributions may be made to Citizens United for Lake Placid (CULP), 2625 Blumberg Park Road, Seguin, TX, 78155 or to the charity of one’s choice. You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.comArrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, TX, 78155, 830-549-5912.

Garza and husband, Gilbert; and two brothers, Desidoro Luna Sr. and Juvencio Luna Jr., all of Batesville; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Alberto R. Luna; and one sister, Felicita L. Hernandez. A rosary was recited on Thursday and Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A funeral mass was held yesterday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Batesville, followed by interment at Batesville Cemetery.

Irene Nava Warren, 77, of Uvalde died on Sept. 27, 2016, at Uvalde Memorial Hospital. She was born on June 6, 1939, in Batesville to Teodora (Mares) and Santos Nava. She is survived by two daughters, Senaida Hurtado and husband, Gillermo, of San Antonio, and Aida Baca of Richmond; one son, Efego Nava of Batesville, Arkansas; three sisters, Anita Nava, Angelina Luna, and Celestina Elizondo, all of Uvalde; three brothers, Eddie Nava of Batesville, and Polo Nava and Freddy Nava, both of Uvalde; 12 grandchildren; 11 greatgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lupe Nava and Willie Nava; and one great-great-grandson, Christian Hurtado. A memorial service was held yesterday at 2 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary.

Gerald Davis

Gerald “Frank” Davis, 83, of Menard, formerly of Camp Wood, died on Sept. 30, 2016, in Menard. A viewing will be held today from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Eden Funeral Home in Eden. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Eden Funeral Home. Davis was born in Abilene in Taylor County on Jan. 7, 1933, to Mable M. (Wallace) and George Lon Davis. According to the family, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and served 20 years as a technical staff sergeant. He graduated from Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde with an Associate of Science degree on Aug. 14, 1980. He married Dolores “Dee” Wallace on Aug. 29, 1969, in Abilene. The family says the couple enjoyed 47 years of marriage and raised nine children. According to the family, the couple enjoyed camping with family and friends; traveled the country bowling in state and national tournaments; and enjoyed hosting family gatherings including games, good food and fellowship. Davis was a skilled mechanic who operated an automotive shop in Camp Wood for many years. He retired as a Justice of the Peace for Real County and also from the Menard School District maintenance department. Davis is survived by his wife, of Menard; three daughters, Donna Geller of Junction, Lou Ann Turner and husband, Steve, of Houston, and Pam McIlvain and husband, Bill, of Papalote; six sons, Doy Geller and wife, Beverly, of The Colony, Donald Davis of Yorktown, Daryl Geller and wife, Sue Beth, of Junction, Gerald Frank Davis Jr. of Port Lavaca, Billy Geller and wife, Mary Joy, of Kerrville, and Russell Davis and wife, Susie, of San Antonio; 23 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Harley Davis of Camp Wood; and numerous nieces and nephews and family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Minnie J. Sherrer; and four brothers, Lonnie Davis, Leslie Davis, Roland Davis, and Roy Davis. Pallbearers will be Matthew Geller, Dwayne Geller, Chance Wooldridge, Randall Geller, Devin Geller, and Ricky Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be Harley Davis, Glenn Davis, Billy Epp, and Jerry Gildart. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Menard American Legion Hall, Post #378, P.O. Box 802, Menard, TX, 76859.
