Joseph M. Lawson

Joseph Michael Lawson, 73, of Sabinal, died on Sept. 26, 2016 at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Sabinal. The Rev. Glenn Luhrs will officiate. Lawson was born on Aug. 26, 1943, in Kincardine, Scotland to Mary and Joseph Lawson. At the age of 16 he entered the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force, where he served for 18 years. He was deployed throughout the Middle East and Southeast Asia; was in charge of establishing communication operations at locations throughout these areas; and was chosen for the Special Air Service. The family says after his military service, he worked for the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation in London in counter intelligence, after which he worked as a civilian for the Saudi Arabian Air Force . He is survived by his wife, Sallie Lawson, of Sabinal; and two sons, James Lawson of San Antonio, and Colin Lawson of Denton. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Brian Lawson.

Delfino S. Vasquez

Delfino Santiago Vasquez, 92, of Uvalde died on Sept. 30, 2016, at his residence. He was born on Dec. 24, 1923, in Uvalde to Feliz (Vara) and Santiago Vasquez. He married Viviana P. Treviño on Sept. 15, 1957, in Uvalde. He is survived by two daughters, Ruby V. Garza and companion, Armando T. Martinez, and Esmeralda V. Santos and husband, Ernesto Jr., all of Uvalde; two sons, Robert T. Vasquez and wife, Julia, of Uvalde, and Alfredo Almendarez of Carrizo Springs; one daughter-in-law, Maria T. Vasquez; and one sister, Concepcion V. Garcia, both of Uvalde; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Vasquez was preceded in death by his wife; one son, Ruben T. Vasquez; two sisters, Eulalia V. Lopez and Santos V. Rodriguez; and four brothers, Jesus Vasquez, Trinidad V. Vasquez, Modesto V. Vasquez, and Tivurcio V. Vasquez. Funeral services were held on Monday at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, followed by interment at Hillcrest Cemetery. Pallbearers were Robert Vasquez Jr., Alfred Garza III, Alfredo V. Rodriguez, Santiago V. Rodriguez, Ernesto V. Garcia, and Enrique V. Garcia Jr.

Alfonso P. ‘’Mitcho’’ Flores, 59, of Sabinal died on Oct. 4, 2016, at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio. He was born on March 8, 1957, in Uvalde to Inez (Puente) and Camilo Flores. He is survived by his wife, Amanda Olivarez of Uvalde; one daughter, Benina Olivarez of San Antonio; two sons, Joseph Flores of Sabinal, and Marc Olivarez of Uvalde; three stepdaughters, Becky Cardenas of New Braunfels, Kathy Cardenas of Selma, and Patty Cardenas of San Antonio; two stepsons, Larry Olivarez of Boerne, and P.J. Cardenas of Seguin; two sisters, Mary F. Rodriguez and husband, Camilo, of Uvalde, and Grace Perades and husband, Ray, of San Antonio; three brothers, Camilo P. Flores and wife, Mariann, of Elgin, Illinois, Manuel Flores and wife, Santos, and Juan P. Flores and wife, Hilda, all of Sabinal; 18 grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Delia Flores of Sabinal; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Antonio P. Flores, Jose Luis Flores, and Jesus ‘’Chuy’’ Flores. A rosary was recited on Thursday and again on Friday at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary in Sabinal. A funeral mass was held yesterday at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sabinal, followed by interment at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were Fendo Robles, Javier Casarez, Carlos Fernandez Sr., Bo Alderson, Jimmy Ramirez, and Richard Olivarez Jr. Honorary pallbearers were his brothers.

Matilde V. Germaine

Matilde Sara Villafranca Germaine, 89, of Montell died on Aug. 3, 2016, at her residence. She was born on Nov. 3, 1926, in Laredo to Matilde (Gutierrez) and Luis Villafranca. The family says she was the eldest of seven children who grew up in a loving, close-knit family; she was beautiful, and had an outgoing and generous personality; she loved family, movies, and music, and was a natural song bird. According to the family, around the age of 12 she began working to help support the family during the depression. She met Richard Germaine as World War II was ending. They were married on Dec. 28, 1947, in Laredo. According to the family, one of the experiences they were able to share was being in a band where he was the drummer and she was the singer. The couple traveled to Michigan and California, then eventually back to Texas, settling in the Hill Country of Montell in 1976, where they built a home. Germaine worked for years for the Nueces River Authority in Uvalde as an executive secretary. The family says she was active in the Catholic Church and loved leading hymns at mass. She was also a member of the Montell Country Club. The family says her favorite activities included quilting, sewing, and baking; she was a talented seamstress who could design and create gowns and heirloom quilts; and she was a loving mother and wife to whom family was the number one priority. She is survived by three daughters, Louise I. Humphrey, and Mary E. Mumme and husband, Allen, all of Montell, and Patricia A. Platt, of West Palm Beach, Florida; eight grandchildren, Louise M. Prouty, Sean A. Noblett, Travis Wayne Humphrey III, Jennifer L. Lippert, Andrew M. Humphrey, Richard L. Humphrey, Alexander G. Platt, and Ashley N. Calk; 11 great-grandchildren, Michael L. Prouty Jr., Ashley M. Prouty, Diana L. Gallup, Travis W. Humphrey IV, Matthew D. Humphrey, Sarah Elizabeth Humphrey, Zachary Noblett, Zane Noblett, Christopher A. Lippert, Brandon K. Lippert, and Adam C. Easty; and two sisters, Beatriz Rose Gee of Pennsylvania, and Maria Irma Peña of Laredo. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters, Berta Alicia Rodriguez, Raquel Christina Skinner, and Maria Valentina Villafranca; and one brother, Ramon Amado Villafranca. A visitation was held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Aug. 7, 2016, at Nelson Funeral Chapel in Camp Wood. A mass of Christian burial was held on Aug, 8, 2016, at 1 p.m. at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Camp Wood, followed by interment at the Montell Cemetery. The Rev. Adrian Adamik officiated. Pallbearers were Wayne Humphrey III, Andrew Humphrey, Richard Humphrey, Chris Lippert, Allen Mumme, and Richman Phipps. Honorary pallbearers were Con Mims, Sean Noblett, and Mike Wismann.

Rocille F. Kramer

Rocille Faye Tampke Kramer, 98, of San Antonio died on Oct. 6, 2016, in San Antonio. She was born on Feb. 21, 1918, in Utopia to Ethel (King) and Otto Tampke. The family says she was a teacher, committed to her community and family; an avid reader, enthusiastic traveler, and loving mother. She is survived by one son, Stanley Shackelford, and wife, Helen, of San Antonio; two daughters, Jane Collins of San Antonio, and Christine Wilmoth of Seguin; two daughters-in-law, Sharon Shackelford of Cypress, and Nita Shackelford of Leakey; two stepsons, Bobby Kramer and wife, Linda, of Uvalde, and Wesley Kramer and wife, Nancy, of San Antonio; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; two greatgreat grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A visitation was held yesterday at the Leakey United Methodist Church at 10 a.m.. A funeral service was held at the Leakey United Methodist Church yesterday at 2 p.m., followed by a graveside service at Leakey Floral Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Real County Public Library, P.O. Peggy B. Rudasill

Peggy Bernice Yancy Rudasill passed away peacefully on Sept. 23, 2016, in Georgetown, at the age of 85. Peggy was born on July 16, 1931, to Ben and Bessie (Tidwell) Yancy and grew up west of Uvalde, along the Nueces River. Peggy was one of six children. Peggy attended school in Uvalde and later worked at First State Bank of Uvalde. She married Roger Rudasill on June 1, 1963, and they made their home on the lower portion of the Rudasill Ranch in Edwards County. Their only child, Wiley Payne Rudasill, was born on April 8, 1966, and was the center of his parent’s world. In 1977, Peggy and Roger purchased a place near Mills, Nebraska to raise registered Angus cattle and moved part of their herd north. After Roger’s death in 1980, Peggy made her home in Rocksprings for several years, as well as spending quite a few years in Mills. A family friend from Mills recently mentioned that Peggy would always make “the best” enchiladas for their birthday, she brought a little bit of south Texas to the Sandhills. Peggy returned to Texas after the arrival of her granddaughters to be closer to her family. Peggy resided in LaCoste most recently. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Bessie (Tidwell) Yancy; her brother, Ben Joe Yancy; and sister Jean Smallwood. She is survived by her son, Wiley Payne Rudasill and wife, Keri, of Georgetown; grandchildren, Rebecca Rudasill Neal and husband, Tommy, of San Angelo and Savanna Sue Rudasill, of Georgetown and San Antonio; Peggy is survived by sisters Bessie Bricker, Lorene Lockley and brother, T.J. Yancy; and numerous nephews and nieces, including special nieces Anne Buffington of San Antonio, and Larka Smallwood of LaCoste. A memorial service was held at Grace Episcopal Church in Georgetown on Sept. 30, 2016, at 2:30 p.m.

Tobias and wife, Sandra; four grandchildren, Priscilla Tobias Lopez, Faythe Gloria Tobias, Vincent Tobias Pellegrini, and Rodney Tobias Lopez; one great-grandchild, Santiago Ricardo Zandate; two brothers, Albert Tobias and wife, Maria, all of San Jose, California, and Fred Tobias and wife, Maria, of Hemet, California; and one sister, Maria Ester Tobias, of San Jose, California. Pallbearers will be Rodney T. Martinez, 69, of Uvalde died on Oct. 6, 2016, at Uvalde Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on Nov. 06, 1946, in Uvalde to Manuela (Rodriguez) and Angel Gomez. She married Florencio Martinez in 1996 in Uvalde. Martinez is survived by her husband of 20 years; four sons, Oscar Bustamante, Ervey Bustamante, and Arnoldo Bustamante, all of Uvalde, and Ernesto Bustamante of Fort Worth; two sisters, Angelita Aguinaga of Uvalde, and Janie G. Riddle of Seguin; one brother, Antonio Rodriguez of Uvalde; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Antonio Gomez. A prayer service was held on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A funeral service was held yesterday at 7 p.m. at Templo Cristiano. Cremation was under the direction of Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary.

Armando T. Martinez

Armando T. Martinez, 61, of Uvalde died on Oct. 10, 2016, at Life Care Hospital in San Antonio. A rosary was recited yesterday and will be recited again today at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A funeral mass will be held tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was born on Aug. 30, 1955, in Uvalde to Orfelinda Soto and Juan Armando Martinez. The family says he was a graduate of Uvalde High School and attended college to pursue his dream of working in the field of law enforcement. His career – which spanned more than 20 years – started with the Uvalde County Sheriff’s Office, where he worked for five years; he then served for the remainder of his career with the Uvalde Police Department. The family says he was loved and respected by many for his work; enjoyed playing golf and was an avid sports follower; and was a loving father, brother, husband, uncle and friend. According to the family, he always followed through with anything he started, even through his last days. He is survived by his father of Uvalde; his mother, of San Antonio; wife, Ruby Garza of Uvalde; one daughter, Sandra Guerra; and one son-in-law, Bryan Guerra, both of San Antonio; three stepdaughters, Viviana M. Garcia, Laura Garza, and Victoria R. Garcia, all of Uvalde; one stepson, Alfred Garza III; four sisters, Norma Sharp and partner, Victor Fuller, Bertha Ortiz and husband, Gabriel, and Lydia Delgado and husband, John, all of Angleton, and Cynthia Garza of Uvalde; five brothers, Juan A. Martinez Jr. and wife, Carol, Andy Martinez and wife, Susie, and Ruben Martinez and partner, Elva Ayala, all of Uvalde, Tony Martinez and wife, Monica, of Austin, and Miguel Reyes of San Antonio; and two grandchildren, Madison Marie Guerra and Bryson Lee Guerra. Martinez was preceded in death by his stepmother, Yolanda Martinez; two sisters, Racheal Taylor and Leticia Reyes; one brother, Rodolfo Reyes; one brother-in-law, Joe A. Garza; and paternal grandparents, Eva and Juan Martinez. Pallbearers will be Juan Martinez Jr., Ruben Martinez, Andy Martinez, Tony Martinez, Alfred Garza III, and Rudy Flores.

Felix Garza Jr., 58, of Batesville died on Oct. 14, 2016, in San Antonio. He was born on Sept. 20, 1958, in Villa Unión, Coahuila, Mexico to Cleotilde (Santos) and Felix Garza Sr. He married Eloisa Villarreal on July 25, 1981, in Batesville. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, of Batesville; one son, Felix Garza III and wife, Becky, of Andrews; one daughter, Gracy Vasquez and husband, Sergio, of Batesville; three brothers, Juan Garza of Mexico, Jose Garza of San Antonio, and Diego Garza of Andrews; father-in-law, Jose Villarreal of Batesville; five grandchildren, Sergio Vasquez Jr., Kimberly Vasquez, Kylie Garza, Cataleya Vasquez, and Kyle Garza; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and mother-in-law, Juanita Villarreal. A rosary was recited on Monday and again on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A funeral mass was held yesterday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, followed by interment at Batesville Cemetery. Pallbearers were Hector Villarreal, Joe Villarreal Jr., Richard Villarreal, Juan Garza Sr., Jose Garza, and Diego Garza. Honorary pallbearers were his nephews.

Deacon Hector Garcia will officiate. He was born on Oct. 7, 1946, in Uvalde to Victoria (Estrada) and Victor P. Luna. He worked in the field of sheep shearing. Luna is survived by one daughter, Nora L. Patiño of Rocksprings: one son, Joe Luna of Dodge City, Kansas; two sisters, Elva Perez and husband, Ricardo, of Uvalde, and Lydia Magaña and husband, Gillermo, of Liberty Hill; four brothers, Ernesto “Neto” Luna and wife, Gloria, of Uvalde, Refujio “Cuco” Luna and wife, Tina, of Fresno, California, David Luna and wife, Vesta, of Llano, and Heriberto Luna and wife, Yolanda, of San Antonio; one sister-in-law, Diane Luna of Uvalde; three granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Ricardo “Ricky” Luna.

Medina, 77, of La Pryor died on Oct. 13, 2016, in San Antonio. She was born on Feb. 4, 1939, in La Pryor to Irene (Hernandez) and Jesus Cervantez. She married Alejandro Medina in 1961 in Laredo. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, of La Pryor; three sons, Jose Cervantez of Willmar, Minnesota, Alejandro Medina Jr. and wife, Martha, and Thomas Medina and wife, Rosantina; three daughters, Margot Perez and husband, Roberto, Irene Herrera and husband, Saul, and Anita Medina; one sister, Rebecca Pargas; and one brother, Juan Cervantez and wife, Tammy, all of La Pryor; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Medina was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Jesus Cervantez; and one sister, Jesusita Esquivel. A funeral mass was held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, followed by interment at La Pryor Cemetery. Pallbearers were Alejandro Medina III, Israel J. Medina, Jose Guzman, Jose Cervantez, Ralph Cervantez, and Evelio Valiente. Honorary pallbearer was Robert Perez.

George R. McCarley

George Robert McCarley, age 73, of Uvalde, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, at Peterson Regional Memorial Hospital in Kerrville. He was born on June 22, 1943, in San Antonio to George Tyra McCarley and Atha Bee (Hendrickson) McCarley. On April 23, 1964, he married Dorothy Howard in Cotulla. In 1966, he joined the U.S. Navy and was assigned to nuclear submarines. He served on the USS Wasp, USS Sam Rayburn and USS Flying Fish. He spent six years in the military. After his service in the military, he was employed by CPL and AEP for over 30 years, from which he retired. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Richard McCarley. Survivors include wife, Dorothy McCarley of Uvalde; daughter, Kendall Patterson and husband, Cuatro, of Kerrville; son, Brian McCarley and wife, Jennifer, of Georgetown; sister, Sarabeth McFadin and husband, Archie, of Uvalde; grandchildren, Hunter Patterson, Riley Patterson, Mason McCarley and Rylan McCarley; and nieces, Keri Baker, Kathy Phillips and Jill Foster. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family. Private services will be held at a later date on the family ranch he loved so much. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville. The preceding is a paid obituary.

Rachel Laverne Bradford, 92, of Uvalde died on Oct. 11, 2016, in San Antonio. She was born on March 28, 1924, in Vance to Lena (Stephenson) and Perry Edgar Burleson. She married Joseph Edward Bradford on Dec. 4, 1942, in Leakey. The family says she was an extraordinary and beloved wife, mother and family member; an old school classy lady; and when it came to common sense she was on the upper end of the totem pole. She was ranch-oriented, knowledgeable about livestock, and a nature lover who enjoyed birdwatching and had many books on the subject. According to the family, she came close to living as long as – and being as tough as – her mother, who was lovingly known as “Maw Burleson.” Bradford is survived by one son, Scott Clay Bradford Sr. of San Antonio; one daughter-in-law, Diane Bradford of Devine; four grandchildren, Celina Luisa Tardugno, Scott Clay Bradford Jr., Brittany Scott, and Zachary Edward Bradford; one great-grandchild, Mia Sarnes; two brothers, Billie James Burleson, and Mickey Joe Burleson, both of Vance; 17 nephews; and seven nieces. Bradford was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Courtney Lane Bradford; four brothers, O.D. Burleson, Robert Edgar Burleson, Woody Lyn Burleson, and David G. Burleson; and six sisters, Dorcas Lola Shoopman, Mary Lou Thomas, Teresa Aline Burleson, Anna Marcelene Bowman, Martha Carol Tumlinson, and Jerry Nell Ward. A graveside service was held on Oct. 21, 2016, at 1 p.m. at the Vance Cemetery. Cody Haynes officiated.

Sara Rothe Fohn, 106, of D’Hanis, formerly of Uvalde, died on Oct. 24, 2016, in Castroville. She was born on Sept. 21, 1910, in D’Hanis to Agatha (Reily) and Henry C. Rothe. A visitation will be held tomorrow from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Guinn-Horger Funeral Home in Hondo. A rosary will be recited on Saturday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m., at Holy Cross Catholic Church in D’Hanis. Elerta “Bobbie” O. Hobbs McCarty, 88, of Uvalde died on Oct. 21, 2016, in San Antonio, after a lengthy illness. She was born on Oct. 2, 1928, in Barksdale to Velma (Fogle) and Otto Hobbs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry McCarty, and one daughter, Cynthia Diane Johnson. She is survived by two grandsons, Craig Eric Johnson of San Antonio, and Stephen Eastley Johnson and wife, Jane, of New Braunfels; two great-grandsons, Cody McCarty Johnson, and Evan Eastley Johnson; one son-in-law, Craig Eastley Johnson of New Braunfels; two sisters, Roberta Gass of Uvalde, and Estella Green and husband, Bobby, of San Antonio; and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held yesterday at 2 p.m. at Uvalde Cemetery.
