Mary E. Herndon

Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Herndon passed away on Feb. 12, 2017, in Amistad Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at the age of 92.

She was born on Oct. 20, 1924, in Barksdale to Robert Thomas Craig and Adelia Elizabeth (Wood) Craig.

She married William Louis Herndon in Eagle Pass on April 19, 1947. He preceded her in death in 2013.

She is survived by a son, Robert Wayne “Bob” Herndon of Columbus; grandchildren, Holly Herndon of Pearland; Ashlie Herndon of Sonora; Jason Herndon and wife, Nancy, of Cypress; and Craig Herndon and wife, Melissa, of Frisco; great-grandchildren, Payton Susann Armbrister and Thomas Herndon of Pearland, and Bronson Wayne Schenkel of Sonora; and daughter-in-law, Anne Herndon of Flower Mound.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; son, Lou Herndon; two brothers, Alvin Craig and Milton Craig; and three sisters, Idella Cowan, Isabel Lowe, and Ima Perkins.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 16, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary with burial following in Hillcrest Cemetery. Mr. Ray Melton and Dr. Elmer Herndon will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Hugh Coates, Kenneth Spence, Gary Mack, Rafael Crispin, John Brown, and Don Herndon.

Beth’s family would like to express their deepest and sincerest appreciation to the following who have cared for her over these past few years: Eddie and Isabelle Lara, and Rafael and Janie Crispin.

Walter O. Harrington

Walter Otis Harrington, 90, of Uvalde died on Feb. 10, 2017, at his son’s residence.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Baptist Temple Church, followed by interment at Hillcrest Cemetery. The Rev. Tony Gruben will officiate.

He was born on Aug. 24, 1926, in Port Arthur to Allie (Smith) and Joseph Otis Harrington. He was drafted into the U.S. Navy in 1944, and served until WWII ended.

The family says Harrington spent years as a painter in Uvalde; he enjoyed dancing with his wife, Vera; and he loved arrowheads, often digging for them in different areas of west Texas. He shared his love for arrowheads with friends and with his son. According to the family, he volunteered at a local nursing home later in life. The family says he blessed many lives and will be deeply missed.

Harrington is survived by one son, Ray Caraway and wife, Marge, of Victoria; one step-daughter, Ella Louise Colvin and husband, Bill, of College Station; one nephew, Dusty Earwood and wife, Carla, of San Antonio; two grandchildren, Rachel Berte and husband, Larry, and Ben Caraway and wife, Cynthia; five great-grandchildren, Ana Elizabeth Berte, Kate Harrington Berte, Callie Caraway, Melanie Zavala, and Wandeny Zavala; and numerous other relatives and friends, including Rhonda Lefteau and DeDee Caraway.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vera Harrington; one stepson, Lewis Gilbert Ross; and one sister, Dorothy Earwood.

Pallbearers will be Ben Caraway, Adam Dillard, Gary Gilbertson, Troy Sheldon, Ken Dillard, and Dusty Earwood.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Baptist Temple Church, 620 E. Main St., Uvalde, TX, 78801.

Brian Arthur Griffin, 43, of San Angelo, formerly of Uvalde, died on Feb. 3, 2017, in San Angelo. A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. Interment will be at the columbarium on the church grounds. The Rev. Mike Marsh will officiate, and a reception in Grace Hall will follow the service. He was born on Feb. 19, 1973, in Uvalde to Janice (Locke) and Gary Griffin. He graduated from Uvalde High School in 1991. He attended San Angelo State University and was employed with H-E-B Store as central checkout manager at the time of his death. He is survived by his parents; two brothers, Gary Mac Griffin and wife, Jennifer, of Uvalde, and Greg Griffin and wife, J.K., of Sugar Land; four nieces, Bella Griffin and Joslynn Griffin, both of Uvalde, and Bailey Griffin and Peyton Griffin, both of Sugarland; two uncles, Charles Griffin and wife, Kay, of Uvalde; Jimmy Locke and wife, Denise, of Boerne; and four cousins, Kari McHone, Darcy Hobby, and Stephanie Locke, all of Boerne, and Amy Ellis of Austin; his H-E-B Store mentor, Lynn Shipley; and many co-workers and friends that he referred to as extended family. Reynaldo C. Pineda, 48, of San Antonio, formerly of Uvalde, died on Feb. 15, 2017, at his residence. The family will greet visitors today from noon to 9 p.m., and a rosary will be recited at 5 p.m., at Rushing- Estes-Knowles Mortuary. He was born on Dec. 3, 1968, in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin to Oralia Cervantes and Alfredo Pineda Sr. The family says he enjoyed working as a mechanic and automobile painter; he worked for more than 25 years in the automotive industry in Uvalde; and he will be missed by friends and family. He is survived by his companion of 5 years, Rocio Munoz, of San Antonio; mother, and husband, Gilbert Gallegos, of Uvalde; two daughters, Keisha Nicole Pineda and Kayla Rae Pineda, both of Uvalde; one sister, Sandra Rubio and husband, Feliciano, of Uvalde; two brothers, Gilbert Gallegos Jr. of San Antonio, and Alfred Pineda Jr. and wife, Monica, of Uvalde; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father. Cremation was previously completed.

Jose Luis Rios, 56, of Batesville died on Feb. 11, 2017, at his residence. He was born on Nov. 17, 1960, in San Antonio to Isabel (Garza) and Alvino V. Rios. Rios married Rosa Anna Ramos on March 9, 1980, in Batesville. He is survived by his wife of 36 years; mother; one daughter, Maria Isabel Rios; and two sons, Jose Luis Rios Jr. and Raul Rios, all of Batesville; six brothers, Alvino Rios Jr., Noe Rios, and Esvaro Rios, all of Batesville, Roland Rios of Germany, Bernaldo Rios of Arizona, and Marcos Rios of Kerrville; seven grandchildren, Michael Rios, Lenora Rios, Leland Rios, Angel Rios, Jordan Rios, Aaliyah Wiebrand, and Colton Wiebrand; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Rios was preceded in death by his father, and one brother, Abel Rios. A rosary was recited on Wednesday and again on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A funeral mass was held on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Batesville, followed by interment at Batesville Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jose Luis Rios Jr., Alvino Rios Jr., Esvaro Rios, Rolando Rios, Noe Rios, Bernaldo Rios, Marcos Rios, and Victor Rios.

Marjorie J. Angermiller

Marjorie Josephine Angermiller, 95, of Sabinal died on Feb. 18, 2017, at Uvalde Memorial Hospital. A funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Sabinal, followed by interment at Sabinal Cemetery. She was born on May 20, 1921, in Galveston to Chalotte (Bigelow) and Joseph Walter Paduh. She married Woody Angermiller on Aug. 4, 1941, in Sabinal. The marriage lasted 59 years, until his death. Angermiller was active in her community, serving as municipal judge for the city of Sabinal for 25 years. The family says she was the first woman to serve on the Sabinal City Council; was instrumental in establishing and serving the Sabinal EMS; was a member of the Sabinal Volunteer Fire Department’s ladies association for many years; and elected as Sabinal Citizen of the Year. In her later years she volunteered at Uvalde Memorial Hospital as a pink lady. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years, and even when she traveled she would locate and attend meetings. The family says Angermiller loved people; she never met a stranger and as a result she had friends all over the country. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one sister, Dorothy Corzine; and one brother, Joseph Paduh Jr. Angermiller is survived by two children, Dale Sellers and husband, Jimmy, of Moulton, Alabama, and Mike Angermiller and wife, Roberta, of Millstone Township, New Jersey; three grandchildren, Robert Angermiller and wife, Michelle, Richard Angermiller, and Laura Angermiller, all of New Jersey; three great-grandchildren, Amanda Angermiller, Alyssa Angermiller, and Joseph Angermiller; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Interment will follow at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery. He was born on Dec. 10, 1953, in Robstown to Amalia (Delgado) and Francisco Martinez. He married Leonor Felix on May 4, 1979, in Parker, Arizona. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, of Sabinal; two sons, Alfonso Martinez of Sabinal and Alonzo Martinez Jr. of San Antonio; two daughters, Sandra Martinez of Pflugerville and Cecilia Martinez of Sabinal; five brothers, Jose Martinez of Knippa, Jose Angel Martinez of Uvalde, Juan Martinez and Francisco Martinez, both of Sabinal, and Felipe Martinez of New Braunfels; four sisters, Estella Ugarte and Angie Longoria, both of Sabinal, Sylvia Barajas of Casa Grandes, Arizona, and Juanita Hill of Parker, Arizona; three grandchildren, Damian Martinez, Nicholas Rodriguez, and Jerry Rodriguez Jr.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Maria Martinez. Pallbearers will be Alfonso Martinez, Alonzo Martinez Jr., Juan Martinez, Jose Angel Martinez, Francisco Martinez, Jose Martinez, Felix Martinez and Joe Longoria.

Rito Perez Sr., 79, of Uvalde died on Feb. 16, 2017, at his residence. He was born on May, 22 1937, in Falfurrias to Esther (Luna) and Pedro Perez. He married Natividad Perez on Oct. 31, 1959, in Clarendon. The family says he enjoyed working as a carpenter by trade; and playing the accordion in his spare time; and he was a dedicated husband and loving father. He was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Perez is survived by his wife of 56 years, of Uvalde; three sons, Rito Perez Jr., Ricardo Perez, and Gilberto Perez, all of Uvalde; three daughters, Rosemary Perez Brook and husband, Tim, of St. Louis, Missouri, Diana Perez Franco of San Antonio, and Alicia Perez Benavidez and husband, Rick, of New Braunfels; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Perez was preceded in death by his parents. The family says he will be deeply missed by all of his family and friends. A rosary was recited on Saturday and again on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A funeral mass was held on Monday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, followed by interment at Hillcrest Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; and four brothers. A prayer service was held on Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A graveside service was held yesterday at 10 a.m. at La Pryor Cemetery.

Esta Pennington, 72, of Sabinal died on Feb. 23, 2017, at Hondo Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on Jan. 1, 1945, in Sabinal to Sally (Jenkins) and Jasper Massey. She married Eugene Elvin Pennington Sr. on Sept. 16, 1958, in Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico. She is survived by one daughter, Lea-Vi Patrice Bridges and husband, Brad; two sons, Eugene Pennington Jr. and wife, Lisa, and John Paul Pennington and wife, Hilda Davis, all of Sabinal; two sisters, Violet Routh Smith and husband, Jerry, of San Antonio, and Peggy Franklin of Marble Falls; one brother, Warren Allen Massey and wife, Elizabeth, of Sabinal; five grandchildren, Johnny Allen Pennington, Eugene ‘’PJ’’ Elvin Pennington III, Jennifer Darlene Pennington and husband, Cody Morgan, Marci Patrice Pennington, and Allen ‘’AJ’’ Bradley Bridges Jr.; and five great-grandchildren, Ambrosia Atrice, Mnason Layne Pennington, Carson Cole Villasana, Anthony Ray Silvas and Cody Louis Morgan. Enedina Chapa Perez, 93, of Uvalde died on Feb. 23, 2017, at her residence. She was born on June 26, 1923, in Uvalde to Antonia (Villarreal) and Serapio Galvan Chapa. She is survived by one daughter, Cynthia Besares and husband, Roger; one sister, Evangelina Chapa; and one brother, LeeRoy Chapa Sr., all of Uvalde; three grandchildren, Clara Villa, Marco Besares, and Isabella Besares; one brother-in-law, Leandro Musquiz of Uvalde; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Adolfo Perez; two sisters, Diamantina Musquiz and Ermandina Carmona; two sisters-in-law, Mercedes Chapa and Mary Alice Chapa; and one brother-in-law, Jose Carmona. A prayer service was held on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Rushing Estes Knowles Mortuary. A funeral service was held on Monday at 3 p.m. at Templo Cristiano, followed by interment at Hillcrest Cemetery. Maria De Jesus Ramirez, 90, of Uvalde died on March 6, 2017, at Uvalde Memorial Hospital. She was born on Jan. 6, 1927, in Nava, Coahuila, Mexico, to Porfiria (Perez) and Andres Ramirez. She married Margarito Ramirez on Dec. 22, 1946, in Nava, Coahuila, Mexico. She is survived by one daughter, Juana Alicia Elizondo and husband, Ernesto; three sons, Miguel Luna Ramirez and wife, Maria, and Gerardo Luna, all of Uvalde, and Manuel Luna and wife, Alma Rosa, of Nava, Coahuila, Mexico; two brothers, Felipe Ramirez and wife, Belia, and Francisco Ramirez and wife, Rita, all of Nava, Coahuila, Mexico; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one brother, Pedro Ramirez. A rosary was recited on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Rushing- Estes-Knowles Mortuary. Judith A. Turner

Judith Ann Turner, 74, of Uvalde died on March 3, 2017, at Uvalde Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on Aug. 17, 1942, in East Hampton, Massachusetts, to Elizabeth (Laducier) and Norbert David Benham. She married George Oso ‘’Buddy’’ Turner on June 23, 1962, in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico. The family says she cherished fellow parishioners at First United Methodist Church in Uvalde as extended family, and the feeling was mutual. She is survived by one son, Glen Turner and wife, Angela Gail; and one daughter, Anna Janine Turner and husband, Jerry Gonzales, all of Uvalde; seven grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers, David Norbert Benham and Ralph Benham; one grandchild, Christian Wade Turner; and several other family members. A memorial service was held yesterday at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church.

Dewey S. Carlisle

Dewey Saunders Carlisle passed away peacefully in San Antonio on March 3, 2017, at the age of 87. Dewey was born in Uvalde on Sept. 21, 1929, to Acree Bishop Carlisle (Tio) and Edith Saunders Carlisle (Dutch). Dewey attended Getty Street Elementary School, West Main Street School and in 1946 he graduated from Uvalde High School. After high school, Dewey attended Southwest Texas Junior College, where he was honored with the Rainey Citizenship Award. Dewey graduated from SWTJC with an associate degree in 1948. After graduating, Dewey worked as a draftsman for Uvalde Lumber Company. On Oct. 11, 1950, Dewey enlisted in the U. S. Air Force, and gained the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1952, Dewey served one year in the Korean War and was awarded the United Nations Service Medal (Korea), the Korean Service Medal, the Bronze Service Star, the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Service Medal. Dewey returned to the United States and received an honorable discharge at Pope Air Force Base, Fort Bragg, North Carolina on Oct. 10, 1954. Dewey is a member of the American Legion Post #26. Before being shipped overseas, Dewey telephoned his future father-in-law, Morris Oldham, and asked him for his daughter’s hand in marriage. After Morris agreed, Dewey asked if Morris would send her on a train to where he was stationed. Dewey married his beautiful bride, Martha Jane Oldham, on Dec. 5, 1951, in Riverside, California. Dewey and Martha enjoyed being married to each other for more than 65 years. Upon Dewey’s return to Uvalde in 1954, he joined Carlisle and Carlisle, a local construction firm owned by his father, Acree Carlisle, and his uncle, Herman Carlisle. In 1967, Dewey purchased the William F. Hare Insurance Agency and formed Carlisle Insurance and Real Estate. Dewey and Martha moved to San Antonio in the early 1980’s where Dewey was the exclusive real estate broker for a fourteen story condominium project in the San Antonio Medical Center, then known as Milam Towers, now known as 7701 Wurzbach. The project was developed by Brigadier General Kenneth R. Milam, and constructed by HB Zachary with the same modular construction as the Hilton Palacio del Rio on the San Antonio Riverwalk. After the project was completed, Dewey worked as a residential real estate appraiser in San Antonio, where he retired from Frost Bank at the age of 65. After Dewey retired, he and Martha traveled extensively throughout the western United States in their Mobile Scout travel trailer. Dewey enjoyed photographing the many vistas while visiting national parks and many other areas of interest, including several extended stays in Las Vegas. Dewey and Martha developed lasting friendships through their travels and membership in the Mobile Scout travel trailer club. Dewey was active in the Uvalde community through his service on the Uvalde City Council, where he served as mayor pro-tem; his service as a director on the Uvalde Memorial Hospital board; and his service to his church as a deacon in the First Baptist Church of Uvalde. Dewey was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Acree Bishop Carlisle Jr. of Houston; and his sister, Mary Jocelyn “Joy” Carlisle of Uvalde. Dewey is survived by his wife, Martha Oldham Carlisle; daughter Leigh Ann Irish and her husband, Lyn; son James A. Carlisle and his wife, Debi; and daughter Mary Christine Meyer and her husband, Mark. Dewey is also survived by eight grandchildren, Toni Richard, Will Sanderlin, Jessica Savoy and her husband, Clint, Brandon Carlisle, Brian Carlisle, Michael Carlisle, Easton Miller, and Bailey Miller; two great-grandchildren, Leona Savoy and Scarlett Sanderlin (Scarlett arrived on March 4th, the day after Dewey passed.) Dewey is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, as well as other dear friends and family too numerous to list. The family would like to thank Vitas Hospice, and the staff at the Methodist Hospital in San Antonio for their tender care of Dewey during his final days. Cindy H. Honaker

Cindy Heatly Honaker, 63, passed away on March 5, 2017, in San Marcos, surrounded by the love, care and comfort of her family and friends following a courageous battle with cancer. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported her through her fight and ultimately gave her peace. She was born in San Antonio on Feb. 2, 1954, to Dr. Maurice Dean and Celia (Tommie) Heatly. After graduating from San Marcos High School in 1972, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in all level physical education/health from Sul Ross State University in Alpine in 1975. While attending Sul Ross she was vice president of Student Congress and crowned Homecoming Queen in 1975. She was an emergency medical technician, teacher and coach in Fort Stockton for several years. Her career as an educator and coach spanned over 30 years, with positions ranging from elementary P.E. teacher in Uvalde; junior high girls athletic coach and elementary P.E. teacher in La Pryor; junior high special education teacher in Sabinal; and junior high inclusion teacher at Mance Park Middle School in Huntsville. Through the years she would take a break from teaching and pursue her entrepreneurial drive, starting businesses Tisket-a- Tasket and Curves for Women in Uvalde. During the summer months when school was not in session Cindy worked as a reservationist for Frio Country Cabins & Resort and as a waitress/bartender at House Pasture Cattle Company in Concan. Cindy started the Uvalde Youth Girls’ Softball Association, was an adult leader for Uvalde County 4-H, a table leader for First United Methodist Church of Uvalde Logos Program and a member of the Junior Service League of Uvalde. Cindy will always be remembered for her strong faith, radiant smile, strong hugs, vivacious and energetic personality and her drive to succeed. She was caring and selfless, always nurturing others in time of need. She had a wonderful sense of adventure and love for the great outdoors. She loved the simple things around her and never took for granted how fortunate and thankful she was. She enjoyed mowing the yard, quilting, going to the movies, fried eggs on enchiladas, a good Bloody Mary and an occasional shot of tequila, but only top shelf ! Cindy made a difference in the lives of the children she taught. Her faith and family became her greatest accomplishments. Her happiest moments were spent with her grandchildren, always teaching them about the love of God and the Lord’s Prayer. She was the #1 fan in the stands at every event for her children and grandchildren. Surviving Cindy are her three children, Samantha Honaker (Jesse) Echtler of Huntsville, William Tanner (Callie) Honaker of Sabinal, and Taylor Dean (Kim) Honaker of Uvalde. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Riata and Kaston Echtler, Harley, Hadley and Hollis Honaker, and Wyatt Honaker. Survived by best friends Pam ‘Gill’ Kimrey, Liz ‘Ennis’ ODea, Cindy Ray, Cathy ‘Tweedy’ Darter, Kathy ‘Schlueter’ Goeld; sister-in-law Millie Heatly Thomasson; and nieces Wendi, Jodi, Becki and Mandi; as well as other nieces, nephews and cousins. She was a strong, independent woman who loved God, her children and grandchildren more than anything else. Becca Elliott Ruthardt said, “She left this world a warrior, like she always lived: never defeated and beautifully brave.” She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. In lieu of flowers, donations to the memory of Cindy Honaker will be gratefully accepted by the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice. A visitation was held yesterday at 10 a.m., followed by a celebration of life service at 11 a.m., at Pennington Funeral Home, with Pastor Scott Bradford of the Dripping Springs UMC officiating.

Dan W. Rose

Dan “Billy” W. Rose, 66, of Brackettville died on March 6, 2017, at Uvalde Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on Feb. 19, 1951, in Alvin to Anne (Cico) and Anthony “Tony” Rose. He grew up in Brackettville and attended Sul Ross State University, as well as Texas A&M University at Galveston. He graduated with a degree in accounting. Rose worked for the majority of his career as a construction foreman, building roads in Texas. According to the family, he loved his family and took pride in being a good friend to coworkers and neighbors. Rose is survived by two sisters, Sis Hawkins of Uvalde, and Bo Hagler and husband, Rick, of Brackettville; two brothers, Tony Rose and wife, Cheryl, of Texas City, and Joe Rose and wife, Angela, of Montgomery; and 11 nieces and nephews, Katy Maulsby, Steven Hagler, Jay Hawkins, Katy Monson, Will Hawkins, Michael Rose, Jamie Hawkins Kirkham, Chelsea Rose, Chloe Rose, Bailey Rose, and Levi Rose. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service is planned for a later date.
