Conrado G. Ybarra

Conrado G. Ybarra, 85, of Uvalde died on March 2, 2017, at Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital in San Antonio. A celebration of life will be held on March 18, 2017, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, followed by interment at the Uvalde Catholic Cemetery. The Rev. Eduardo D. Morales will officiate. He was born on Nov. 2, 1931, in Blewett to Francisca (Gonzalez) and Arturo Ybarra II. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955. After retiring from the Central Power and Light Company, he worked for the Uvalde Police Department as a school crossing guard at the intersection of U.S. Highway 90 and Benson Road in Uvalde. According to the family he served as a Eucharist minister and greeter at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and was a member of the Familia Sagrada Bible study group for 19 years, and also a member of the Thomas Valle American Legion Unit Post #479 since 1966. Ybarra was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Candelaria Ybarra DeLaPaz and Anita Ybarra Avalos. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Lydia Saenz Ybarra of Uvalde; six sons, Arturo Ybarra and wife Patricia, Xavier Ybarra and wife Alma, and Conrado Ybarra Jr. and wife, Sulema, all of Uvalde, and Robert Neal Sanchez and wife, Guadalupe, and James Sanchez and wife Laura, all of San Antonio, and Jerico Sanchez of Austin; one daughter, Cynthia Sanchez Alvarado and husband, Frank, of San Antonio; one grandaughter whom he raised, Michelle Luevano of Fort Worth; two brothers, Arturo Ybarra III and wife, Cindy, and Guadalupe Ybarra, all of Uvalde; four sisters, Refugia Ybarra Uriegas, Carmen Ybarra Uriegas and husband Rodolfo, Olga Ybarra Sanchez, and Rosa Ybarra and husband, Joe, all of Uvalde; and numerous grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations to American Legion Post #479, for the scholarship fund, P.O. Telesforo Alvarado, 74, of Uvalde died on March 9, 2017, at Northeast Baptist Hospital in San Antonio. He was born on Oct. 6, 1942, in Knippa to Francisca (Vela) and Julio Alvarado. He married Virginia Carriola on Nov. 9, 1968, in Uvalde. Alvarado is survived by his wife of 48 years; mother; two daughters, Norma Alvarado and Michelle Almaraz; and one son, Christopher Michael Alvarado, all of Uvalde; four grandchildren, John Paul Alvarado and wife, Noemi, of Hobbs, New Mexico, and Brianna Herrera, Jacob Ryan Almaraz, and Jose Luis Almaraz III, all of Uvalde; two great-grandchildren, Xavier Julian Alvarado and Jordyn Alvarado, both of Hobbs, New Mexico; five brothers, Henry Alvarado of Knippa, Salvador Alvarado and Robert Alvarado, both of Uvalde, Julio Alvarado of Grand Prairie, and Edward Alvarado of Westmorland, California; four sisters, Irma Balzen of Cupertino, California, Rosemary Llanes of League City, Emma Benavides of San Antonio, and Ofelia Ivarra of Lytle; and numerous nieces and nephews. Alvarado was preceded in death by his father; one brother, Raul Alvarado; and three sisters, Beatriz Lopez, Carolina Lopez, and Amalia Perez. A funeral mass was held on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, followed by interment at Knippa Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jose Luis Almaraz Jr., Daniel Alvarado, Arnold Villafranco, George Bocanegra, Tony Salas and Robert Alvarado Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Jacob Ryan Almaraz, Jose Luis Almaraz, Xavier Julian Alvarado, Jordyn Alvarado and Brianna Herrera.

Kathleen Chronis

Kathleen Chronis, 87, of Utopia died on March 10, 2017, at her residence. A memorial service will be held on March 27, 2017, at 10 a.m. at the Utopia Methodist Church. She was born on July 21, 1929, in Goffstown, New Hampshire to Kathleen (Fox) and A. Kenneth Hambleton. Chronis is survived by one daughter, Linda Leist and husband, Glenn, of Shiner; one daughter-in-law; and seven grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Douglas B. Comstock, and one brother, James Thomas Hambleton. Claude A. Graham

Claude Allen Graham, 91, of Utopia died on March 11, 2017, at his residence. A graveside service will be held today at 11 a.m. at Jones Cemetery in Utopia. He was born on July 27, 1925, in Tarpley to Mildred (Hicks) and Claude Murray Graham. He attended Trio, Utopia and Sabinal schools, graduating from the latter in 1943. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he served during World War II. Graham married Nelle Schaefer on Dec. 24, 1946, in Uvalde. The couple had three children. Having worked on ranches most of his life, he semi-retired and the family moved to Granite Shoals where they opened Graham’s Grocery Store. The family says he loved family and friends, fiddle music, fishing, playing the domino game 42, and telling stories. He was preceded in death by his wife; son, Claude Allen Graham Jr.; and one brother, Punk Graham. He is survived by two daughters, Sandra Whitten and husband, Greg, of Coleman, and Jeanie Kolb and husband, Pee Wee, of Llano; one granddaughter, Ashlee Whitten of San Marcos; two sisters, Ethel Maude Weynand of Utopia, and Marie Lee of Magalia, California; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gary D. Heyen

Gary Dan Heyen passed away on March 3, 2017, at his home in Dallas after a brief illness at the age of 49. Dan was born in Texas City on Nov. 2, 1967, to John Gary and Beverly Heyen. He graduated from Newman Smith High School in Carrollton, and attended Texas Tech University, where he studied international economics. Dan’s professional career of 30 years was spent in information security. He managed a cyber security group at Santander Consumer USA and prior to that worked as an information security engineer for Santander, Ambit Energy and Verizon Communications Inc. business division. Dan received several star performer and peer awards for his commitment to excellence and team work. The happiest times of Dan’s life were spent enjoying nature with family and friends. He loved the beaches in California and Padre Island, snow skiing in Colorado, visiting Big Bend with his father and sister, and family gatherings on the Guadalupe River. He had wonderful memories of camping on the Frio River with his grandparents and cousins and bringing his children to Willie Edwards’ place on the Nueces River. Dan had made plans to visit Uvalde with his son for spring break and was looking forward to a family reunion this summer at Concan. Those who knew Dan will remember him for his quiet, unassuming manner; his brilliant mind; his sense of humor and his love for his family. His children were the light of his life and his inspiration. He is survived by his parents; his son, Taylor, and daughter, Sophie, of Frisco; his sister Amy Jones, her husband, Matt, and their son, Mick, of Lakewood, Colorado; aunts and uncles, Dan and Susie Brown of Austin; Cathy Heyen of San Saba; Marie and Sam Johnson of Colorado Springs; and Martha and Riley Kothmann of Mason; and cousins Robin Welch, John Kothmann, Delia Pascos, Lisa Ondak and Genny Johnson. Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Mary and Jack Heyen and Dorothy Gillett Brown and Cyrus Brown. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 18, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, located at 343 North Getty Street in Uvalde, with Father Mike Marsh officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Larka K. Hundley

Larka Kaye (Smallwood) Hundley, age 58 of LaCoste, Texas passed away on Monday, Feb. 20, 2017, in Devine, Texas. She was born in Uvalde. She was preceded in death by her parents, Larkin M. and Erma Y. Smallwood. She is survived by her husband, James Lee Hundley of LaCoste; stepdaughters, Sarah O’ Donoghue of Hawaii, Lauren Hundley of California, step-son Jared Hundley of Texas; sister, Jean Anne Buffington and Richard Heller of Garden Ridge, Texas; nieces, Bonnie Elizabeth Coyle, husband John, daughters, Elizabeth and Emmamarie; Alice Anne Bruni, husband Robert Jr., sons, Justin and Travis Bruni, all of San Antonio, Texas. Larka was a graduate of Alamo Heights High School and studied music at Trinity University, where she excelled in piano. She is registered as a both a Daughter of the Republic of Texas and of the American Revolution. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2017, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in LaCoste. Services will conclude at the church. Mariana Moreno, 85, of Uvalde died on March 12, 2017, at Amistad Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. A funeral mass will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was born on May 30, 1931, in Blewett to Anselma (Velasquez) and Don Mateo Leal. She is survived by five sisters, Teresa Rodriguez of San Antonio, and Roselia Gonzales, Altagracia Angeles, Socorro Castillo, and Josefa Sanchez, all of Uvalde; two sons, Gilbert Moreno and Ricardo Moreno, both of Uvalde; seven grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Moreno was preceded in death by her husband, Marcos Moreno; one grandson, Paul Moreno; one great-grandson, Christian Moreno; two sisters, Gloria Looney and Alicia Leal; and three brothers, Refugio Leal, Pablo Leal, and Ernesto Leal. Pallbearers will be Ricardo Moreno Jr., Arturo Moreno, Matthew Moreno, Brianna Nicole Campbell, Jocelyn Moreno, Maricella Moreno and Brian Troupe. Cremation was under the direction of Rushing- Estes-Knowles Mortuary.

Ralph E. Sheedy, 90, of San Antonio died on March 13, 2017, in San Antonio. Graveside services will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Camp Wood Cemetery. He was born on March 18, 1926, in Blewett to Hazel (Pinkston) and Ralph Sheedy Sr. He married Wandarene Merritt on Nov. 17, 1956, in Uvalde. She preceded him in death in 1998. Sheedy is survived by two daughters, Brenda Sturm and husband, Paul, and Lori West and husband, John, all of San Antonio; three grandchildren, Katherine Ewing, Michael Sturm, and Daniel West; three greatgrandchildren; one brother, Jack Sheedy and wife, Leota of Azle; and one sister-in-law, Lola Sheedy of San Antonio. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Lamar Sheedy, Nolan Sheedy, David Sheedy, and Dwight Sheedy; and three sisters, Corrine Hayes, Josephine McCutchen, and Annie Morris. Harley M. Wood

Harley Milton Wood, 90, of Uvalde died on March 6, 2017, at his residence. He was born on April 8, 1926, in Hackberry to Violet B. (Colwell) and Joe D. Wood. The family says Wood enjoyed ranching, hunting and the outdoors; and he was a lifetime member of the NRA. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Maurine McFatter; one brother-in-law, Jeff McFatter; and his wife, who the family says was the love of his life, Mageleane “Maggie” Cochran. He is survived by cousin, Johnny Connell and wife, Delores, of Sabinal, and numerous other cousins. A viewing was held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Chapel in Camp Wood, followed by a graveside service at 3 p.m. at the Barksdale Cemetery. The Rev. Carroll Vernor Jr. officiated.

Agnes L. Best

Agnes Louise Best, 94, of Uvalde died on March 16, 2017, at Amistad Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. A viewing will be held on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Riley Funeral Home in Woodville, followed by a graveside service at the Magnolia Cemetery. She was born on June 23, 1922, in Crete to Reba (Horn) and John Coleman Ray. She graduated from Milby High School in Houston in 1938, at the age of 16. She then began working at Nagorny Construction Company, while attending Massey Business College. She then went to work for Hughes Tool Company/ Dickson Gun Plant Division in Houston where she met her future husband, Paul Howell Best. She married him on July 23, 1944, in Houston. The couple was married for 51 years before his death on July 26, 1995. In 1955, she went to work for Keystone Valve Corp. where she learned to operate a computerized IBM 632 Electronic Typing Calculator. The family says there were only three companies in Houston that had that particular computer at that time. Best retired from Keystone in 1971. She then began working in the registrar’s office at Houston Baptist University where she remained until 1976 when the couple moved to Bryan. In 1976, the couple started Twin City Appliance, where she worked in sales and bookkeeping and made deliveries. They sold the business in 1984. The family says Best was a top-notch seamstress and loved doing handwork including crocheting, needlepoint, crewel, cross-stitch, and quilting; she began piecing quilts when she was 18 months old under the supervision of her paternal grandmother, Sarah Jane Ray. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and Order of the Eastern Star. The family says when their daughters were young, she and her husband were active in the youth department at the West University Baptist Church in Houston, teaching Sunday School classes, going on youth trips as counselors and opening their home for youth socials, where everyone loved her homemade ice cream. Best is survived by three daughters, Paulette Harris and husband, Emmett, of Uvalde, and Laura Lanette Robertson and husband, Garland, and Jeanette Tucker Witte and husband, Jack, all of Longmont, Colorado; four grandchildren, Ronny Harris and wife, Kim, Kurt Harris and wife, Melody, Amanda Bybee and husband, Chris, and Matthew Buehler; six great-grandchildren, Rileigh Harris, Jackson Harris, Lily Harris, Lainey Harris, Jocelyn Bybee, and Jack Henry Bybee; two brothers, Dudley Ray of Spring and Billy Ray of Groveton; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Nina Burkhart; and three brothers, Truitt Ray, Buel Ray, and Mack Ray. He was born on April 25, 1963, in León, Guanajuato, Mexico to Maria De Los Angeles (Rodriguez) and Jesus Cervantes. He married Felipa Parra on May 26, 1984, in León, Guanajuato, Mexico. Rodriguez is survived by his wife of 32 years of Uvalde; his father of León, Guanajuato, Mexico; five sons, Hilario Cervantes Jr. and wife, Maria, Humberto Cervantes and wife, Cynthia, Eduardo Cervantes and wife, Breza, Efrain Cervantes, and Alvaro Cervantes, all of Uvalde; five sisters, Esther Cervantes of Guanajuato, Mexico, Ernestina Cervantes of Pachuca, Mexico, and Magdalena Cervantes, Reyna Cervantes and Enedina Cervantes, all of Tijuana, Mexico; three brothers, Rogelio Cervantes and Enrique Cervantes, both of Uvalde, and Candelario Cervantes of León, Guanajuato, Mexico; and six grandchildren, Hilario Cervantes III, Osvaldo Cervantes, Dariana Cervantes, Victoria Cervantes, Mayte Cervantes and Arleth Cervantes, He was preceded in death by his mother. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery. He was born on Dec. 19, 1935, in Progresso, Coahuila, Mexico, to Maria de Jesus (Castilla) and Cruz Rodriguez. He married Maria de Jesus Viera on April 6, 1957, in Monclova, Mexico. He is survived by his wife of 59 years of Uvalde; five daughters, Maria del Rosario Hernandez of Uvalde, Romanita Flores of San Antonio, Silvia Rodriguez of La Pryor, and Gloria Mata and Icela Gonzales, both of Odessa; five sons, Jesus Rodriguez and Juan Jose Rodriguez, both of Uvalde, Santos Rodriguez of Arkansas, and Enrique Rodriguez and Eduardo Rodriguez, both of San Antonio; two sisters; seven brothers; 33 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; one sister; four infant children, Jesus Rodriguez, Ramon Rodriguez, Juanita Rodriguez, and Maria De Jesus Rodriguez; one granddaughter, Maricuz Rodriguez; and one great-grandson, Nehemias Cardona. Paul E. Wolf

Paul Edward Wolf June 1, 1954 – February 18, 2017

February 18, 2017, the world lost a good man and the heavens gained a great angel. Paul Edward Wolf of Rio Frio left us after a two week battle on life support at the Methodist Hospital in San Antonio. He was born on June 1, 1954, in Alameda, California, to George Wolf Sr. and Margret Rose Burke Wolf. He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Wolf, and the love of his life and mother of his son, Cindy Sue Ware-Wolf. Those left to honor and cherish his memory are his father, George Wolf Sr. of Bloomfield, Indiana; brothers, George Wolf Jr. and Thomas Wolf; sister, Kathryn Dunn; wife, Loretta Filby Wolf; son, Dylan Thomas Wolf and wife Ashley (Parks) Wolf; granddaughters, Makayla Elaine, Fallon Nicole, and Autumn Brooke; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by lifetime best friend and “adopted” brother, James Collins of Beaumont. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, May 7, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m. at 455 County Road 429A in Uvalde; and again on Monday, June 5, 2017, at 2 p.m. at Witt Crossing in Camp Wood; and also a memorial service is planned in Corpus Christi, at a date not yet determined. Arrangements are under the personal care of Nelson Funeral Home of Camp Wood.

Maria A. Del Toro of La Pryor, 84, died on March 21, 2017, at her residence. She was born on Aug. 15, 1932, in La Pryor to Macaria (Martinez) and Tirso Lopez. She married Raul Del Toro on Jan. 6, 1952, in La Pryor. She volunteered doing missionary work and was a member of several organizations, including being vice president of Asamblea Evangelica Inc. and president of Femenile en Marcha. She was the pastor of Templo La Hermosa in Batesville since 1990. She is survived by seven daughters, Maria ‘’Cookie’’ Arvizo, Mary Ann Flores and husband, Serapio, Suzan Del Toro, and Dora Del Toro- Martinez and husband, Jerry, all of La Pryor, Christina Del Toro of Victoria, Mary Ellen Sambrano and husband, Martin, of Carrizo Springs, and Margarita Sierra and husband, Jimmy, of Nursery; two sons, Jose Luis Del Toro and wife, Lydia, of La Pryor, and Joey Del Toro of Florida; one sister, Florentina Garcia of Frederick, Oklahoma; 27 grandchildren, Joey II Del Toro, Rauly Del Toro, Joey III Del Toro, Jonas Del Toro, David Arvizo, Jessie J. Gonzales, Jeremaih Gonzales, Isaac Flores, Luis Flores, Roy Sierra, Roy Flores Jr., Daniel Martinez, Anna Jo Adams, Ruth Ann Del Toro, Joanna Estrada, Nicole Quijano, Ester Garcia, Christy Ann Hernandez, Cassie Hernandez, Chriselda Harrington, Crystal Sanchez, Patricia Longoria, Marsha Galindo, Stephanie Flores, Raymond Sambrano, Randy Sierra and Nathaniel Martinez; 54 great grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held yesterday at 3 p.m. at Templo Gethsemani Church in La Pryor with interment to follow at La Pryor Cemetery. Pallbearers were David Arvizo, Jessie J. Gonzales, Isaac S. Flores, Luis Raul Martinez, Roy Del Toro Sierra, Roy Flores Jr., Jerry Daniel Martinez, and Nathaniel Martinez. Honorary pallbearers were Joey Del Toro and Jonas De Toro.

Bennie M. Gomez, 96, of Uvalde died on March 21, 2017, at Uvalde Memorial Hospital. She was born on March 21, 1921, in Uvalde to Maria Augustina (Reina) and Nicholas C. Morales. She married Santiago G. Gomez on Dec. 24, 1953, in Uvalde. She is survived by one daughter, Ana Gomez of Uvalde; three sisters-in-law, Eliza Morales of San Antonio, Alicia Morales of Houston and Frances Quiroba of Uvalde; numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Charlie. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two sisters, Angelina Romo and Mary Louise Wilson; and three brothers, Sixto Morales, Nicholas Morales Jr. and Catarino Morales. A rosary was recited on Friday at 7 p.m. at Rushing- Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A funeral mass was held yesterday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, followed by interment at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Juan Guerrero, 69, of Knippa died on March 23, 2017, at his residence. A funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Rushing- Estes-Knowles Mortuary with interment to follow at Knippa Catholic Cemetery. He was born on March 27, 1947, in Santa María, Coahuila, Mexico to Eusebia Borjon and Juan Guerrero. He married Maria Ortiz on May 17, 1973, in Margaritas, Coahuila, Mexico. He is survived by his wife of 43 years; two daughters, Ana Laura Nash and husband, Michael, and Veronica Gracia and husband, Jaime, all of Knippa; one sister, Genobeva Soria of Fort Worth; two brothers, Narciso Guerrero of Santa Maria, Coahuila, Mexico, and Augustin Guerrero of Ft. Worth; three grandchildren, Bailey Nash, Jordan Nash, and Malachi Gracia; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; and one brother. Pallbearers will be Jaime Gracia, Michael Nash, Marco Ortiz, Fernando Ortiz, Rolando Esquivel, and Fernando Rodriguez.

John C. Meyer

John Clinton Meyer, 64, of Birmingham, Alabama, formerly of Uvalde, died on March 21, 2017, at his residence. A graveside service will be held today at 3 p.m. at Concan Cemetery. He was born on March 5, 1953, in San Antonio to Mary Manning (Peters) and Edwin Clinton Meyer. He graduated from Lee High School in Huntsville, Alabama, in 1971, then from the University of Alabama in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He married Cheryl Hendon on Oct. 14, 1978, in Roanoke, Alabama. He was a rancher, and the family says he was a prankster with a positive attitude; and he loved his canine companion, Susie, sitting with her as she died. He was the executive vice president of the Uvalde Chamber of Commerce, and also of the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce in Georgia. He was the manager of membership and public relations for the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce in Alabama. The family says while at the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce, he lobbied for Interstate 575 near Atlanta, and traveled in the first car to traverse that road; he was a member of the Concan Cemetery group, and chartering president of the Upper Frio River Protection Association, Inc. Meyer is survived by his wife, of Birmingham, Alabama; one sister, Louise Meyer of San Antonio; four cousins, William D. Meyer of Fulshear, L.C. Meyer of Lakeway, Neil Meyer of Washington, D.C., and Brian Meyer of Louisville, Colorado; and other cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
