Dorothy Sellers Stevens, 88, of Midland, formerly of Uvalde, died on March 4, 2017, in Midland. She was born on Feb. 19, 1929, in Floresville to Artis Barber and William Elbert Sellers. She was the fifth of of seven children born to the couple. She attended schools in Sutherland Springs and graduated from Sutherland Springs High School in May of 1945. She then attended Southwest Texas Teachers’ College (now Texas State University) where she graduated in August of 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education. She met her future husband, Jack William “Jay” Stevens in Floresville. The couple married on May 5, 1951, in Floresville. The couple first resided in Pleasanton where he was employed with the United States Department of Agriculture and she taught and coached students in Poteet. They moved to Pearsall in 1955 where their first son, Randy, was born in September of 1956. The couple then moved to Uvalde where their second son, David, was born in September of 1959. They resided in Uvalde until 2004. Stevens took several years off from teaching after the birth of her sons, but she returned to teaching from the mid-1960s until she retired in 1989. They enjoyed traveling with friends and visiting their grandchildren after retiring; they were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Uvalde and the First Presbyterian Church of Midland. Stevens is survived by two sons, Randy Stevens and wife, Julie, of Midland, and David Stevens and wife, Doris, of Seattle, Washington; five grandchildren, Jordan Stevens and wife, Adrian, of New York, New York, Audrey Stevens of Waco, Reed Stevens and wife, Mary Morgan, Elaine Hardwick and husband, Turner, and William Stevens, all of Dallas; one brother, Leroy Sellers and wife, Julie, of Floresville; and numerous nieces and nephews. Billie Jean Simpson Taylor, longtime resident of the San Antonio area, passed away Friday, March 10, 2017, at the age of 65. Billie was born Dec. 11, 1951, in Houston, the daughter of Lester Eric Simpson and Hattie Selma Schatte Simpson. She married Ernest L. Taylor on June 29, 1968, in Uvalde. Billie is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Ernest L. Taylor of Adkins; her son, James Taylor and wife, Dori, of Jacksboro; her daughter, Sharon Taylor and husband, Robert Ortiz, of Round Rock; her grandchildren, Hendrix Taylor, Samuel Ortiz, and Logan Taylor; and her siblings, Ted Simpson, Connie Causey, Michael Simpson, Joyce Ayers, Timothy Simpson, and Patrick Simpson. C. R. McFarland
C.R. (Charles Ralph) McFarland of Sabinal passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by family on Friday, March 24, 2017, at age 91. He was affectionately known as “Mr. Mac” throughout his community. McFarland was born on April 2, 1925, in Maywood, Illinois to Ralph and Irene McFarland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Irene McFarland; his wife, Evelyn McFarland, of 51 years; and his two sisters, Joyce McFarland and Glenda Delott. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Pat McFarland; children Michael McFarland and wife, Pearl, of Greenville, Texas; step-children Anthony Anizan and wife, Barbara, of Pearsall, Texas; Jeanette Blount of Luling, Louisiana; Robert Hudson and wife, Rita, of Castroville, Texas, and Paul Hudson and wife, Alissa, of Fredericksburg, Texas; brother-in-law Tommy Titsworth and wife, Silvia, of Comfort, Texas; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. McFarland was a three-sport letterman at East Proviso High School when he graduated in 1943. Upon graduation, he immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and moved to San Antonio, Texas, for basic training at Lackland AFB. McFarland ended up at “Gunnery School” at Laredo AFB. From there, he was assigned to Big Spring and became a bombardier. After that he flew on a B-17 and was a flight officer. He flew missions over the battle fields, making two trips to Austria to pick up French prisoners of war. McFarland came back to San Antonio in August of 1945 for training in B-29s to get ready for assignment in the Pacific and ended up making the area his home. When he came back to San Antonio, he enrolled for 12 hours at night school at Trinity University and played football for a semester. From there, he landed an athletic scholarship. He also played basketball as a guard and was first baseman on the Trinity baseball team. He is in an elite group of former Trinity athletes who lettered in three sports. Upon completing his education, McFarland spent the next 54 years in public school education. He was enticed to Sabinal in 1953. During his time in Sabinal, he was hired as a principal, but also was an assistant football coach and girls’ basketball coach. He also coached track and baseball. For the last 19 years prior to his retirement, he was superintendent of Sabinal Independent School District. McFarland was a community leader, active volunteer, and a deacon of First Baptist Church. He was a lifetime member of the Lions Club, served on the board for the Emergency Medical Services and was an EMS volunteer, served on the Sabinal ISD board of education, Sabinal City Council, Uvalde County Appraisal District’s appraisal review board and was the Sabinal cemetery caretaker. McFarland was elected for open term to the Texas Silver Haired Legislature in the early 1990s. One of many programs he helped launch in the area was the development of the Sabinal Youth Baseball Field. A funeral service was held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Sabinal, followed by interment at Sabinal Cemetery. Pallbearers were Brian McFarland, Glen Anizan, Frank Anizan, Robert Hudson, Paul Hudson and Joe Borrego. Honorary pallbearers were the deacons of the First Baptist Church in Sabinal. Neva Joyce Chaney White, 85, of San Antonio, formerly of Uvalde, died on March 24, 2017, at Hopes Residence in San Antonio. She was born on Jan. 15, 1932 in Utopia to Charlcy L. (Whitlock) and John H. Chaney. She was a graduate of Uvalde High School. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Garland Doogie White; her mother and stepfather, W.E. Davis; and her father and stepmother, Josephine L. Chaney. She is survived by two daughters, Stephanie Seward of Waco and Shannon J. Wilson of Austin. A private service was held, followed by interment on March 27, 2017, at Waresville Cemetery in Utopia. Arrangements were under the care of M. E. Rodriguez Funeral Home in San Antonio.

Mary Fischer Dirksen, 89, of Uvalde died on March 29, 2017, at her residence. A vigil service will be held today at 7 p.m. at Rushing Estes Funeral Home. A mass of resurrection will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, followed by interment at Hillcrest Cemetery. She was born on Jan. 13, 1928, in Dayton, Ohio to Catherine (Steinmetz) and John Fischer. She married Herbert Dirksen on June 17, 1950, in Frenchtown, Ohio. The family says she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Dirksen was a registered nurse, trained at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. The couple operated a family dairy farm for 19 years, before moving to Texas in 1969. In Uvalde, she worked at Uvalde Memorial Hospital and Amistad Nursing Home. She was a director of nursing for many years and established the certified nursing assistant program. She and her husband were active members of Sacred Heart Church, serving for many years as catechists and eucharistic ministers, bringing communion to the homebound. She was a long time member of the Catholic Women’s Club, Green Thumb Garden Club, Texas Agri-Women, Chili Peppers, the Uvalde Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and an advocate for El Progresso Memorial Library. The family says Dirksen enjoyed playing bridge and participating in water aerobics at the Herby Ham Activity Center. Mildred “Milly” Lippke, 78, died on April 1, 2017, in Uvalde, Texas. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 8, 2017, at Trinity Lutheran Church of Uvalde with the Rev. Mark Tews officiating. Milly was born on April 15, 1938, near Albion, Nebraska to Elmer E. and Irene K. Sparks. After living in Wichita, Kansas, for a few years during the latter part of World War II, her family moved to the Home Ranch near Glazier in the Texas Panhandle in 1946. She was salutatorian of the graduating class of 1956 from Canadian High School. In keeping with her lifelong commitment to education and the acquisition of knowledge, Milly later pursued a BA in English from the University of Houston, graduating magna cum laude in 1982. During high school, Milly began working for the telephone company – moving to Amarillo after graduation to work as a service advisor for Southwestern Bell. While living at the YWCA, she met the love of her life, Hagen Lippke. They were married on Aug. 27, 1958, and lived in Bryan and Tyler, Texas, as well as Ames, Iowa, while Hagen was completing his advanced studies. In 1966, they returned to Texas, settling in Angleton to raise their family. Devotion to her husband and family were the hallmarks of Milly’s life. She was committed to helping her children and their families find fulfillment and joy in their individual pursuits. A woman of strong convictions, she was a fierce advocate for her children and grandchildren. She also strove to instill in them the appreciation for literature and music that enriched her own life. Moreover, Milly was known for her compassion for others and a great generosity of spirit. Milly was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Hagen Lippke; two sisters, Claudette Hand and Carolyn Welch; two sons, David Lippke and wife, Tina, of Denver, Colorado, and Carl Lippke of Houston, Texas; one daughter, Sheila Childers and husband, Leonard, of Kingwood, Texas; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. A prayer service was held yesterday and will be held again today at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A funeral service will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Rushing-Estes- Knowles Mortuary. Interment will follow at La Pryor Cemetery. He was born on Jan. 6, 1971, in Carrizo Springs to Rosa (Castillo) and Jose B. Pargas Sr. He was a volunteer fireman with La Pryor Fire Department, an EMT and volunteered with a Boy Scout Troop. He is survived by his parents, of La Pryor; his companion, Rita Ochoa of La Pryor; one daughter, Patricia Nicole Pargas of Wichita, Kansas; three sons, Pfc. Joshua Taylor Pargas and wife, Brenda, of El Paso, and Jose Bermea Pargas III, and Julian Ray Pargas, both of La Pryor; two sisters, Raquel Pargas Arroyos and husband, Eduardo, of Uvalde, and Rosanna Pargas of La Pryor; two brothers, Joaquin Pargas and Jacob Pargas, both of La Pryor; two granddaughters, Emily Pargas and Emily Aguilar; six step-children, Becky Lopez, Rose Lopez Ramirez, Pedro Rodriguez, and Jaime Lopez, all of of Crystal City, Jose Lopez of Deansville, and Joanna Rodriguez of La Pryor; and 22 step-grandchildren. Pargas was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Antonia and Francisco Castillo, and paternal grandparents, Leocardia and Ramon Pargas. Pallbearers will be Joaquin Pargas, Jacob Pargas, Joshua Taylor Pargas, Jose B. Pargas III, Pedro Rodriguez III, Edward Cruz, Kevin McClanahan and Jose Lopez. Honorary pallbearers are Julian Ray Pargas, Zanthony Rodriguez, Jericko Cervantez and Patrick Ramirez.

Linda J. Pomeroy
Linda Joan Pomeroy, 68, of Uvalde died on March 22, 2017, in San Antonio. A funeral service will be held on April 15, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Uvalde. She was born on Feb. 12, 1949, in Uvalde to Billie (Davis) and James Abraham Mitchell. The family says she often prayed for her children and despite some struggles in life she loved them deeply; they recall many wonderful memories of her. The family says her grandchildren always made her smile; it gladdened her heart to hear them pray at the dinner table. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by three daughters, Sandra Tope of San Antonio, Christy Ruiz of Tyler, and Carla Pomeroy of Uvalde; and three sons, Jimmy Young of San Antonio, William Young of Uvalde, and Carl Pomeroy of El Paso; one brother, Chalmers Mitchell of Hondo; one sister, Coy Radack of Florida; and numerous grandchildren. Cremation was under the direction of Puente and Son Funeral Chapels of San Antonio.

Patricia Lynn (Morris) Dorflinger has joined her Lord Jesus Christ in eternity at the age of 62. She was born on Oct. 1, 1954, in Quanah, Texas, to Bentley Levon Morris and Katie “Bertha” Morris. After marrying Philip Dorflinger in 1976, they lived seven years in Pasadena, Texas, before moving to Uvalde in 1984. The Dorflingers have been married for 40 years, 33 of which were in Uvalde, where they raised their four children. Pat completed her education in Uvalde and taught public school for 20 years prior to retirement, mainly teaching early childhood grades. She has been a notable and favorite teacher of very many children over the years and an inspiration to her peers. A woman of great virtue, she attended and served at the Bread of Life Christian Fellowship on High Street for the past 30 years, where she influenced many with her grace, character, and with her special gift of decorating and hospitality. She is survived by her husband, Philip, and her four children; Nils (Jodi) Dorflinger, Ivan (Katie) Dorflinger, Max (Eloisa) Dorflinger, and Katie (Jeff) Thigpen. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, and numerous loving in-laws. She is survived by one sister, Wanda, and her brother, Wendell, and their families. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her sister Priscilla; as well as her father-in-law. Pat’s Christian testimony in her life and through her illness has honored God and His body of believers. Her sphere of influence has been significant, reflecting her character, faith, grace, hope, and a belief in a loving God who she knows only wants the best for His children. She will be dearly missed by many. A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church sanctuary in Uvalde on Monday, April 17th at 6:30 p.m.
