Lilly B. Garza, 81, of Uvalde died on May 15, 2017, in San Antonio. A service will be held today at 11 a.m. at La Primera Iglesia Bautista, followed by interment at Hillcrest Cemetery. A prayer service was held yesterday at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes- Knowles Chapel. She was born on Aug. 17, 1935, in Ozona, to Angelina (Parada) and Chon Barron. She married Alejandro “Alex” A. Garza in June of 1958, in Uvalde. She is survived by four sons, Alex Garza Jr. and wife, Seong Ja, of Mount Vernon, Washington, Bobby Garza of Uvalde, Orlando Garza of San Antonio, Sergio Garza and wife, Kati, of San Antonio; one daughter, Sandy B. Garza of Schertz; six grandchildren, Alex Gene Garza Jr. and wife, Maria, and Dr. Hyon He Garza and husband, Adrian Head, all of Tucson, Arizona, Chon Garza of Seattle, Washington, Alex Joe Garza and wife, Briana, of Copperas Cove, Crystal Covarrubias and husband, Roger, of San Antonio, and Chelsea Martinez and husband, Jacob, of Uvalde; one brother, Samuel Barron of Uvalde; two sisters, Mary Jane Martin of Wimberley, and Alyce Barron Bohuslavicky of Katy; eight greatgrandchildren, Makayla Covarrubias, Roger Covarrubias Jr., Alex Joe Garza Jr., Jay Martinez, Joshua Martinez, Journey Faith Martinez, Jacob Garza, and Jazylyn Babuca; and numerous nieces and nephews. Garza was a member of La Primera Iglesia Bautista in Uvalde. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Paul Barron; two sisters, Minnie Ramirez and Isidra Barron; one granddaughter, Ana-Lisa Garza; and three great-grandsons, Joshua Garza, Robert Rodrick Garza and Jacob Martinez Jr. Pallbearers will be Alex Gene Garza, Chon Garza, Alex Joe Garza, Russel Bohuslavicky, Chente Arispe and Joe Gonzales Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Roger Covarrubias, Jacob Martinez, Paul Roller, David Garza, Sergio Ortiz, Jimmy Martin and Sammy Barron.

Mary Helen McFadin of Uvalde passed away on May 13, 2017, at her residence at the age of 93. She was born on Nov. 10, 1923, in Knippa to Henry Adolf Cook and Anna Belle Wollschlaeger Cook. She married Archie Auld McFadin in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Jan. 27, 1945. She is survived by two sons, Archie McFadin Jr. and wife, Sarabeth, and Danny McFadin and wife, Jean, all of Uvalde; daughter, Mary Anna “Sweetie” McNair and husband, Donny, of Driscoll; six grandchildren, Stacy McFadin, Laurie McFadin, Keri Baker and husband, Bryan, Kathy Phillips and husband, Nathan, Jill Foster and husband, Chad, and Brad McNair; six great-grandchildren; and sister, May Belle “Cookie” Paradeaux and husband, Will, of Luling. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and three sisters, Clara Brooks, Louise Towery, and Anna Lee Cook. Graveside services were held on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at 10 a.m. at Uvalde Cemetery. Pastor Will Paradeaux officiated. The family of Mary Helen McFadin would like to thank Sylvia Ruiz and Cruz Ramos for their many years of devotion and dedication to caring for her. They would also like to thank the staff of The Veranda for the years of love, support, and friendship expressed to Mary Helen.

Ruiz is survived by four daughters, Susana R. Vasquez of Batesville, Rosa Kuntz and husband Chris, of Manteca, California, and Elena R. Temores, and Enedina Cruz and husband, Emilio, all of Uvalde; three sons, Manuel Ruiz Jr. and wife, Michelle, of San Antonio, Carlos Ruiz of Batesville and Ruben Ruiz and wife, Maria, of Abilene; six sisters, Minerva Orozco and Gregoria Garcia, both of Chicago, Illinois, Hermelinda Jimenez of Kerrville, and Maria Jovita Negrete, Maria Antonia Garcia and Genoveva Cruz, all of Batesville; two brothers, Rodolfo Vasquez of Batesville and Armando Vasquez of Chicago; 27 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three greatgreat- grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel Ruiz; one daughter, Margarita Ruiz; parents; one sister, Odilia Sanchez; two brothers, Anacleto Vasquez and Mauricio Vasquez; and one grandson, Rogelio Medrano Jr. A rosary was recited on on Saturday and and again on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A mass of resurrection was held on Monday at 2 p.m. at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Batesville, followed by interment at Batesville Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mario Vasquez Jr., Marcos Vasquez, Moises Vasquez, Alex Temores, Carlos S. Ruiz and Manuel Carlos Ruiz.

Pedro V. “La Pitocha” Peña Jr., 65, of Uvalde died on May 6, 2017, at Amistad Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Interment of ashes will take place Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery. Arturo ‘’Art’’ Lopez Aguirre, 48, of Uvalde died on May 19, 2017, in Castroville. He was born on Nov. 28, 1968, in Nueva Rosita, Coahuila, Mexico, to Ofelia (Lopez) and Arturo Aguirre. He married Sandra Camacho on Nov. 7, 2007, in Las Vegas. He was a graduate of Uvalde High School and he owned Lunkers Grill. The family said he was a Pittsburg Steelers and San Antonio Spurs fan who loved music and dancing, barbecue and cooking, and his family and friends. He is survived by his father, of Uvalde; wife, of Uvalde; five daughters, Ofelia Aguirre, Alyssa Aguirre, Kyra Aguirre, Natasha Ayala and Lisa Olivarez; three sons, Arturo Aguirre Jr., Miguel Aguirre and Emelio Ayala; and one brother, Hector Aguirre, all of Uvalde; four grandchildren, Kristina Ayala, Kendria Rodriguez, Kianna Rodriguez and Kaelyn Aguirre; and father-in-law, Fidel Camacho, of Uvalde. He was preceded in death by his mother, and motherin- law, Guadalupe G. Camacho. A rosary was recited on Sunday and again on Monday at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A mass of resurrection was held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, followed by interment at Hillcrest Cemetery. Pallbearers were Hector Aguirre, Daniel Salas, Neto Salas, Miguel Aguirrre, Art Aguirre Jr., Emelio Ayala, Juan Adame Jr., Ralph Arias, Manuel Vasquez, Mike Vela, Tony Martinez, Juan Garza, Miguel Suarez and Oscar Cassiano.

Eulalio Garza Jr., 60, of Knippa died on May 17, 2017, at his residence. He was born on Oct. 25, 1956, in Pearsall to Eva (Ybarra) and Eulalio Garza Sr. He was a graduate of Pearsall High School. Garza was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Joy Jackson Garza, of Knippa; four sons, Rodney Garza of Beeville, Alejos Garza of Uvalde, Eulalio Garza III of San Antonio, and Eric Lamb of Knippa; four daughters, Heather Ramsay Bryant of Garland, Aurora G. Perez and Hayley Gutierrez, both of Pearsall, and Marsi Garza of Knippa; two brothers, Pedro Garza of Pearsall, and Marcos A. Garza of Connecticut; six sisters: Eva Moreno of Pearsall, Martha Garza of San Antonio, Maria Rojas of Florida, Patty Garza and Maria Cantu, both of Charlotte, and Victoria Rivera of Austin; 23 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Cremation is under the direction of Uvalde Funeral Home. A memorial service is planned for a later date.

Roland A. Boedeker

Roland August Boedeker, 97, of Concan, passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2017, at Regent Care Center in The Woodlands, Texas. A memorial will be held on Monday, June 5, 2017, at St. Raymond’s Catholic Church in Leakey at 10 a.m. Roland was born on April 1, 1920, in Cameron, Texas, to Louise and Emil Boedeker. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII, honorably discharged in 1945. He married Beverly Joy McLaughlin on May 8, 1948, in Taylor, Texas. Together they raised seven children. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Beverly; one brother, Edmund Boedeker; four sisters, Getrude Michalka, Juanita Taylor, Alma Boedeker and Florence Boedeker; and his oldest son, David Boedeker. He is survived by daughter Mary Boedeker of Uvalde; son Thomas Boedeker and his wife, Tanya, of Soldotna, Alaska; daughter Vivian Land and her husband, Keith, of Bastrop; daughter Nancy Prihoda and her husband, Bill, of Conroe; son Alan Boedeker and his wife, Amy, of Bryan; Leah Boedeker and her husband, John Sizemore, of Spring; daughter-in-law Mary Gay Boedeker; nine grandchildren: Tom, Ian, Stephanie, Tara, Alice, Lindsey, Erin, Kyle, and Henry; and nine great-grandchildren: Travis, Kevin, Lauren, Colton, Beverly, Mikayla, Ida, Henry, and Daxton. Roland and Beverly retired to Concan around 1989 and were active with local organizations, including St. Raymond’s Catholic Church, Friends of Real County Library, Leakey Lions Club, and American Legion. Rosa Flores, 78, of Uvalde died on May 24, 2017, at her residence. She was born on Oct. 14, 1938, in Uvalde to Francisca (Ledesma) and Atilano Gonzales. She is survived by her husband, Luis Flores Sr., of Uvalde; two daughters, Sylvia Madrid of San Antonio, and Alicia Flores of Uvalde; two sons, Luis Flores Jr. and Jose Flores, both of Uvalde; two sisters, Paulina Mireles and husband, Felix, and Genoveva Morales, all of Uvalde; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Jerry C. Harrell

Jerry Crouell Harrell of Fredericksburg, and formerly from Uvalde, passed away on May 17, 2017, at Stone Oak Methodist Hospital in San Antonio. Jerry was born on Nov. 30, 1931, in Rio Frio, Texas, to Fait and Jewell Crouell. Jerry married Jack Harrell in Uvalde, Texas, on June 1, 1950. She graduated from Uvalde High School in 1950, where she was voted most popular, served on student council, was a cheerleader, played basketball and tennis. After graduating high school and marrying Jack, they had their only child, Wayne Harrell of Fredericksburg, Texas, in 1952. Shortly after the birth of their son, they moved to Corpus Christi where Jack had a long and successful career in oil and gas and Jerry worked as a dental assistant. In 1973 they moved to Houston, Texas, where they continued their careers until retirement in 1989, when they moved back to their hometown of Uvalde. While in Uvalde, they became very active in the First Baptist Church, where Jerry had been baptized as a young girl in 1939. After Jack’s death, Jerry moved to Fredericksburg to be close to her son Wayne. In the five years she lived in Fredericksburg she made many friends drinking coffee and visiting daily at the HEB coffee klatch. Jerry had many passions in life, none bigger than her Church and attending Baylor University football games. She would say that even though she wasn’t a graduate she bleeds green and gold. In 2008, both Jack and Jerry received honorary diplomas from Baylor University due to their longstanding commitment to the university and its football program. Jerry was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved Jack; sister Nean Horton of Leakey, Texas, and sister Laurie Vaughn of Rio Frio, Texas. Jerry is survived by her son Wayne Harrell and wife, Kathy, of Fredericksburg; sister Bo Allen and husband, Sam, of Rio Frio; one granddaughter Jennifer Pyka and husband, Nick, of Austin, Texas; and one great-grandson, Jackson Pyka of Austin. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, whom she dearly loved. A memorial service was held on Saturday, May 20th at the First Baptist Church of Uvalde with her niece, Dr. Vicki Vaughn, officiating. The family suggests that memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Uvalde, 220 N. Robert E. Hunt III

Robert Earl “Trey” Hunt III, 41, of Millsap died on May 14, 2017, in Brighton, Colorado, of brain cancer. He was born on July 28, 1975, in Houston to Jamie (Hicks) and Bobby Hunt, both formerly of Uvalde. The family says he was an esteemed trainer and coach within the North Texas cutting horse community. An National Cutting Horse Association member since 1988, Hunt specialized in starting and fitting two-year-olds and was the NCHA lifetime earner of $179,795. He had the second highest-selling colt, STP Tell Me Kitty, who sold for $200,000. “He loved horses and he loved cutting. He adored his wife and daughter,” said his father. Hunt is survived by his parents, of Comfort; wife, Jenna Hunt; and one daughter, Kay Hunt, both of Millsap; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and friends. A celebration of life was held on May 24, 2017, at 2 p.m. at Parker County Sheriff’s Posse Hall in Weatherford. Hermenejildo G. Maldonado, 100, of La Pryor died on May 27, 2017, at Uvalde Memorial Hospital. He was born on March 27, 1917, in Encinal to Santos Garza and Hermenejildo Maldonado. He married Maria Bermea in 1945 in La Pryor. Maldonado was a World War II veteran that was awarded a European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign service medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal and a Purple Heart Medal. He is survived by two daughters, Guadalupe Norma Maldonado and Edna Maldonado, both of Eagle Pass; two sons, Hermenejildo Maldonado of La Pryor, and Ronald Zawack Maldonado of Eagle Pass; one sister, Alicia Mosqueda of Saginaw, Michigan; one daughter-in-law, Patricia Castro of La Pryor; five grandchildren, Maria Dominique Maldonado, Hermenejildo Maldonado Jr., Anthony Maldonado, Gabriela Castillano Maldonado and Samantha C. Martinez; great grandchildren, Jorge Duarte, Linda Martinez and Avyanna Martinez. He was preceded in death by his wife; one daughter, Martha Linda Maldonado; two brothers, Jose Maldonado and Atanacio Maldonado; and three sisters, Inez Gonzales, Toribia Rodriguez and Eloisa Garza. A funeral mass was held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Josephs Catholic Church, followed by interment at La Pryor Cemetery. Pallbearers were Anthony Maldonado, Herman Maldonado, Homer Bermea, Jessie Gonzales, Onesimo Perez and Ricardo Lopez.

Ricardo Perez, 49, of Uvalde died on May 27, 2017, at the Methodist Texsan Hospital. He was born on Nov. 23, 1967, to Maria Ana Ramirez and Hector Zamora. He married Melinda Lopez on Jan. 29, 1995, in Uvalde. Perez is survived by his wife of 22 years; two sons, Sean Michael Perez and companion, Mariah Leigh Gaytan, and Ryan James Perez; and one brother, Joe Perez and wife, Veronica, all of Uvalde; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Templo Cristiano Church, followed by interment at Hillcrest Cemetery. Juan Flores Garza, 99, of Fairhope, Alabama, died on May 20, 2017, in Fairhope, Alabama. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at St. Benedict Church, located at 2339 York St. in Blue Island, Illinois. Immediately following the service, at 4:30 p.m. there will be a time of visitation for family and friends. The Rev. Connor Danstrom and deacon Juan Limon will officiate. He was born on Dec. 4, 1917, in Cotulla to Francisca (Flores) and Alvino Garza. According to the family, for many years Garza worked as a migrant worker, traveling from state to state; he later retired from U.S. Steel, South Chicago, Illinois, where his co-workers lovingly referred to him as “Tex.” The family says he enjoyed planting his garden. They described him as an exceptional cook specializing in his family’s favorite chile con queso, and they said he was a loving person who cared deeply for his family. Garza was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 35 years, Angelita Aviles Garza; two daughters, Oralia Garza Lebensorger and Silvia Garza; and three brothers, Alvino Garza Jr., Geronimo Garza and Tannis Garza. He is survived by two daughters, Rosa Garza Rios and husband, Raul, of Fairhope, Alabama, and Emma Mendez of Chicago; two sons, Oscar Garza and wife, Juanita, of Genoa, Illinois, and Hector Garza and wife, Sylvia, of Blue Island, Illinois; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was born on Jan. 1, 1960, in Uvalde to Dominga Lopez and Santos C. Flores. Flores is survived by his parents, of Uvalde; six brothers, Isidro Lopez Jr. and Jesse Garcia and wife, Josie, and Arturo Flores and wife, Diana, all of Uvalde, Celedonio Garcia Jr. of San Antonio, Frank Garcia and wife, Linai, of Fort Worth, and David Flores and wife, Anita, of Wisconsin; four sisters, Ermelinda Donato and husband, Enrique, of Kermit, Gloria L. Canales and Esmeralda Garcia, both of Uvalde, and Virginia Barnes of Converse; and numerous nieces and nephews. A visitation was held on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and again yesterday from noon until 9 p.m. A rosary was recited on Tuesday at 7:30 and again yesterday at 7:30 at Uvalde Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Jesse Garcia, Frank Garcia, Arturo Flores, Danny Ruiz, Rene Ruiz and Ryan Aguilar.

Siria Z. Ruiz, 82, of Uvalde died on June 2, 2017, at the St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital in San Antonio. She was born on July 9, 1934, in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, to Luciana Mora and Felix Zavala. She married Geromino Ruiz on Jan. 8, 1950, in San Isidro. Ruiz is survived by two daughters, Dora Villanueva and husband, Juan, and Rosa Rodriguez, all of Uvalde; five sons, Geromino Ruiz Jr. and wife, Guadalupe, Juan Manuel Ruiz and wife, Victoria, Felix Ruiz and wife, Olga, Alfredo Ruiz and wife, Martha, and Sergio Ruiz and wife, Frances, all of Uvalde; three sisters, Francisca Gonzales of Uvalde, Virginia Leija of Sabinal, and Consuelo Cortez of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico; one brother, Seferino Zavala of Eagle Pass; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter, Gloria Ruiz; one son, Juanito Ruiz; two sisters, Maria Lugo and Josefina Cortez; and three brothers, Martin Zavala, Fidel Zavala and Santos Zavala. A prayer service was held on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A funeral service was held on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Rushing-Estes-Knowles Chapel, followed by interment at Hillcrest Cemetery.
