Petra Luna, 72, of Batesville died on June 20, 2017, at her residence. She was born on Nov. 20, 1944, in Batesville to Concepcion (Rodriguez) and Juvencio Luna. She is survived by three daughters, Bertha Galindo and Elizabeth Gomez, both of Houston, and Nelda Cuellar and husband, Ramon, of Freeport; two sons, Jorge Alberto Villarreal and wife, Elizabeth, and Armando Villarreal, all of Batesville; one sister, Consancion L. Garza; and two brothers, Desidoro Luna and Juvencio Luna, Jr., all of Batesville; 22 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jorge Villarreal; one daughter, Lorraine Villarreal; parents; two brothers, Jose Luna and Alberto Luna; and one sister, Felicita Hernandez. Rosa Cardona

Rosa Cardona, 69, of Batesville died on June 22, 2017, in Amarillo. She was born on Aug. 21, 1947, in Poteet to Maria (Quevedo) and Frank ‘’Pancho’’ Cardona. She married David Treviño Sr. on Dec. 28, 1965, in Batesville. Cardona was a member of St. Hyacinth Catholic Church in Amarillo. She worked as a caregiver for the elderly for more than 35 years before retiring. Her retirement activities included trips to the casino, where slot machines were a favorite and sleeping and eating was optional. She was an avid sports fan and her eyes shined with spirit when walking in to the Dallas Cowboy stadium and the Texas Rangers ballpark. The family says that for a while, she made them believe that Roger Staubach was ‘’our daddy.” Family, particularly her beloved grandchildren, was important to Cardona; and her sparkling personality and joyful demeanor contributed to her well-lived life. She is survived by six children, David Treviño and wife, Mirella, of Batesville, Sonia Treviño and husband, Troyce, Stephanie Frausto and husband, Tino, and Joe Camacho, all of Amarillo, and Cristina Alvarado and husband, Osmar, and Sonny Guerrero, all of Denver, Colorado; one god-daughter, Patricia Rodriguez; one sister, Betty Duran; and three brothers, Margarito ‘’Peggy’’ Cardona, Eduardo Cardona, and Rafael Cardona, all of Chicago, Illinois; 19 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Guadalupe Treviño and Martha T. Cantu, both of Batesville; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter, Connie Treviño, two sons, David Treviño Jr. and Ronnie Treviño; two brothers, Frank Cardona and Mariano Cardona; and one sister, Hermina ‘’Minnie’’ Cardona. A rosary was recited on Monday and again on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A funeral mass was held yesterday at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Batesville, followed by interment at Batesville Cemetery. Charlotte H. Hicks

Charlotte Helga Doris (Hofman) Hicks, 78, of Fredericksburg died on June 17, 2017, at Windcrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Fredericksburg. She was born on Dec. 7, 1938, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, to Sophie Anna Elise (Collmann) and Otto Hofmann. She married Grady Moody Hicks of Uvalde on July 4, 1956, in Hanau am Main, Germany. She is survived by four sons, Thomas Hicks of Kerrville, and Kim Hicks, Alan Hicks and Mike Hicks, all of Fredericksburg; one adopted daughter, Heidi Brewer of Bethany, Oklahoma; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her exhusband; and one sister. Cremation was under the direction of Schaetter’s Funeral Home in Fredericksburg. A private family burial will be held at a later date at Hillcrest Cemetery in Uvalde.

Pauline D. Kelling

Pauline Dornbusch Kelling, 85, of Knippa died in the early morning hours on June 23, 2017, at Methodist Texsan Hospital in San Antonio. She was born on July 31, 1931, in Knippa to Ella (Falkenberg) and Paul Dornbush. A lifelong member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Knippa, she was baptized on Aug. 31, 1931, by the Rev. Gottlieb Langner. She was confirmed in faith by the Rev. Eugene Meier, and at the age of 16 she began taking piano lessons from him. Kelling attended school in Knippa, and graduated from Knippa High School in May of 1948. In her youth, she enjoyed playing volleyball and basketball. She began her career by working as a bookkeeper at the Balzen Garage; she later worked as an operator for the Knippa Telephone Company. She married Ray Elwood Kelling on Oct. 29, 1950, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Knippa. The couple had three children, and spent 46 years together. They began farming in 1954, and worked together in this business until his death. Beginning in 1951, she served God and her church family as the organist for Emmanuel Lutheran Church. She retired from that position after playing for more than 60 years at church services. An active participant in her children’s activities, she served as an adult leader for the Uvalde County 4-H program and a cook for the 4-H County Camp for many years. In 1980, she received the Conservation Homemaker of the Year award presented by the Southwest Conservation District. In 1988, Kelling and her husband were named Uvalde County Junior Livestock Show honorary superintendents in recognition of their efforts with 4-H programs. She was an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church Women, serving as treasurer and hosting the annual women’s Christmas party; and of a Lutheran Brotherhood fraternity where she served as an officer. Kelling savored food and loved to prepare it for family and friends; she served snacks for vacation Bible school each year. She will be remembered for the German chocolate cakes and potato salad served at many community events in Knippa, such as the annual Knippa Chicken Supper, which she looked forward to each year. She dedicated months to preparing goods and desserts which were coveted in the Country Store and at the dessert table. For many years she baked event cakes, especially delighting in the task when they were for the grandchildren. She enjoyed watching the San Antonio Spurs win, and kept her mind sharp by watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy and playing Words with Friends. She loved to travel, and particularly delighted in cruises taken with family. Kelling was preceded in death by her husband, who died on Feb. 25, 1997; her parents; and one niece, Belinda Dornbusch. She is survived by one daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Landry, and husband, Mark, of Knippa; two sons, Michael Kelling and wife, Donna, of Brenham, and Mark Kelling and wife, Beverly, of Hondo; 12 grandchildren, Sara Wingfield and husband, James, Matthew Kelling, and David Landry and wife, Emily, all of Austin, Stephen Kelling and wife, Brigette, of Bullard, David Box and wife, Jennifer, of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, Philip Landry and wife, Caitlin, of Katy, Derrick Box and wife, Elle, of Tucson, Arizona, Nathan Landry of Knippa, Andrew Landry and wife, Kendra, of Baytown, and Joshua Kelling, Jacob Kelling and Abigail Kelling, all of Hondo; 11 great-grandchildren, Andrew Wingfield, Olivia Wingfield, Hudson Landry, Lucy Kelling, Ivy Kelling, Ruth Kelling, Corrie Kelling, Austin Box, Libby Box, Madison Landry and Mabel Landry; one brother, Elton Dornbusch; friend and caregiver, Lourdis Esquivel; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. A funeral was held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Knippa. The Rev. Nathan Lafrenz officiated. Interment followed at the Knippa Cemetery. Her grandsons served as pallbearers and her granddaughters led the processional. Honorary pallbearers were Dick Geries, Norman Kuebel, Raymond Schwarzlose, Roy Silvas, Noel Troxclair and Billy Word. Jewel C. Woolf

Jewel Catherine Heard Woolf of Uvalde, Texas known to all as Julie passed away on June 26, 2017, after a lengthy and brave fight with cancer in the presence of her family. She fought with all she had till the very end. Julie was a loving, giving and hardworking woman who helped in the lords work in thousands of ways. She was a friend to all who knew and loved her and she has left this world a little better for having lived in it, while those who were touched by her are a little better for having lived in the warmth of her presence. She came into this world early on the morning of Feb. 4, 1953, as the fourth of five children born to Sidney Sterling Heard and Mary Estella Heard of Reagan Wells, Texas, where she was raised. She was named after her great aunt Jewel Womack and her great grandmother Catherine Gross. She attended elementary, junior and high schools in Uvalde. After graduation from high school, she attended Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde. She married the love of her life, Roger Milton Woolf on Sept. 14, 1973. They lived their lives together for 44 years in Uvalde, while raising two sons, Jason and Brian Woolf. Julie was a lifelong member of the order of both the Uvalde and Hondo chapters of the order of the Eastern Star. The Eastern Star was more than an organization to Julie. It was her passion and love and something she cared dearly and deeply for. It blessed her with many deep and special friendships. Julie was a dedicated and faithful employee of Uni-First Corporation for almost 30 years as a customer service representative. She is survived by her loving and dedicated husband, Roger Woolf of Uvalde, Texas. Two devoted sons Jason Woolf of Marion, Texas and Brian Woolf (her baby) of Uvalde, Texas. An amazing daughter-in-law, Lauren Woolf of Marion, Texas, and three grandchildren who were the light of her world, Evan Woolf, Mariilyn Woolf and Cullen Woolf of Marion, Texas. Two amazing inlaws who were more surrogate parents than in-laws, Milton and Jerri Woolf; a loving sister and brotherin- law, Jo Beth and Jerome Warren of Uvalde, Texas. Her brother Wyatt Heard and wife, Annelle, of Uvalde, Texas; Sister Margret Skillern of Pasadena, Texas; Sister Nikki Kreger of Houston, Texas; sister Ginny Robertson and husband, Paul, of Houston, Texas; many nieces and nephews and their families; as well as her extended Eastern Star and masonic family. The family greeted family and friends yesterday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A funeral service will be held today, June 29, 2017, at 10 a.m. at Baptist Temple. Robert “Bob” R. Locke, 88, of Kerrville, died on June 25, 2017, in Kerrville. A funeral service will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Kerrville. Rob Lohmeyer of the First Presbyterian Church of Kerrville will officiate. He was born on Aug. 5, 1928, in Sabinal to Mabel (Cartwright) and Ira P. Locke. Locke grew up in Sabinal and graduated from Sabinal High School. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1949, with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering. He married Lenora Kornegay on Nov. 24, 1956, in Fort Worth. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a Major. After military service, he went to work for Pure Oil Company, which later became part of the Union Oil Company of California. Locke worked for Union Oil for 35 years in several different locations across the United States, eventually retiring from his position as supervisor of gas contracts in Midland. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one halfsister, Dorothy Akoury. Locke is survived by his wife, Lenora K. Locke of Kerrville, and one son, Stephen R. Locke of Houston. Alfonso Flores Jr., 75, of Leakey, formerly of Sabinal, died on July 4, 2017, at his residence. A service of remembrance will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Sabinal. He was born on Aug. 23, 1941, in Sanderson to Elisa (Aguilar) and Alfonso Flores. A graduate of Sabinal High School, Flores enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on Nov. 9, 1960, and was sent to Lackland Air Force Base for basic training. While serving, he studied the electrical trade; he later became an electrician and continued that career throughout his life. The family says he enjoyed gardening and being outside in nature. He loved fishing and hunting, and treasured moments spent with his family. Flores is survived by his wife of seven years, Betty Flores of Leakey; four children, Saul Flores and wife, Crystal, Omar Flores, Elisa A. Martin and husband, Charles, and Yzette Haag and husband, Luke, all of Sabinal; 20 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roy Flores and wife, Gloria, of Castroville and Jaime Flores and wife, Elia, of Sabinal; one sister, Irma Rodriguez and husband, Robert, of Sabinal; and numerous nieces and nephews. Antonio R. Hinojosa, 85, of Uvalde died on July 2, 2017, at his residence. He was born on Dec. 1, 1931, to Josefa (Rosales) and Isaac Hinojosa. He married Pura Hill on Oct. 16, 1952, in Uvalde. Hinojosa was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. The family says he was ordained as a deacon on April 1, 1979, and was a member of the Cursillistas, and Holy Name Society. He was retired, having previously worked for the Coca Cola Company. Hinojosa is survived by three sons, Rito Antonio Hinojosa and wife, Cynthia, of Waterford, Michigan, and Jose Luis Hinojosa and Richard Hinojosa, both of Uvalde; one sister, Olivia Hinojosa of Uvalde; 20 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two sons, Rodolfo Alberto Hinojosa and Alfredo Hinojosa; one sister, Lydia Reyes; and two brothers, Robert Hinojosa and Fortunato Hinojosa. Louise Price Trees, 97, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, July 2, 2017, at 11:50 a.m. She was born Frances Louise Dyess on June 24, 1920, in Jeff Davis County, Mississippi, to parents Lonnie S. Dyess and Ida Mae Shoemake Dyess. She was the eldest of their six children. At the time of her death, she was living with her daughter, Twila Price Flowers and her husband, Troy G. Flowers, in Carriere, Mississippi. Her funeral services are being handled by Hulett Winstead Funeral Home in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and were scheduled for Friday, July 7, 2017, in the chapel of Hulett Winstead Funeral Home. A visitation began at 10 a.m. and was followed by a service at 11:30 a.m. The Rev. Glenn Shoemake and Dr. Alan D. Strange officiated. Interment followed at Highland Park Cemetery in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. On Oct. 5, 1941, Frances Louise Dyess married Dennis E. Price Sr. (predeceased) of Stone County, Mississippi. He was in the U.S. Navy and they lived in San Diego, California, and New Orleans, Louisiana, prior to returning to Mississippi and starting their family at the end of World War II. She is survived by her children, Dennis E. Price Sr. and his wife, Barbara, of Harlingen, Texas, Twila Price Flowers and her husband, Troy, of Picayune, Mississippi, and Stephen Carey Price and his wife, Donna, of Garland, Texas. Following the death of her husband in October of 1963 in Mobile, Alabama, she moved her family back to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and bought a house on North 22nd Avenue. She worked as the secretary for a local insurance agency a while before becoming the secretary for Dr. Joseph Greene, Dean of the School of Business at the University of Southern Mississippi. On June 1, 1970, Louise married Walter O. Trees (predeceased) and moved to Del Rio. After several years, they bought a small farm near Uvalde and moved there. They lived there together until his death in August of 2014. She is survived by his daughters, Barbara Trees McCabe of Kerrville, and Beverly Thompson of Medway, Ohio. In April of 2015, Louise moved back to Mississippi to live with her daughter. During her tenure in Texas, she fulfilled a lifelong dream by completing her B.A. in English and education. She then taught high school for a few years. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Uvalde for many years, where she taught a ladies’ Sunday School class. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Alexine McIlwain and Winnie Strange, also her brothers, L. S. Dyess Jr. and Roy G. Dyess. She is survived by her brother, Edwin G. Dyess and wife, Theda, of Brandon, Mississippi. Other survivors include grandchildren: Troy Glen Flowers Jr., Stephanie F. (Jeff) Carson, Amanda (Chris) Daniels, Andrea (Leonel) Munoz; great grandchildren, Aaron Munoz, Ava Munoz, Chloe Carson, Caston Daniels, Stella Carson and Landry Munoz; and many nieces and nephews.
