Jose J. Cruz Sr., 90, of Spofford died on July 11, 2016, in San Antonio. A mass of Christian burial will be held today at 10 a.m. at St. Blaisé Catholic Church in Spofford. Interment will follow at Spofford Cemetery with full military honors rendered by the United States Marine Corps. He was born on May 22, 1926, in Del Rio to Maria De Jesus (Guerrero) and Seberino Cruz. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Manuel Cruz, Camilo Cruz, and Seberino Cruz Jr.: and two sisters, Irene Charles and Maria Ignacia Cruz. Cruz is survived by his wife Maria Esther Cruz of Spofford; two sons; Jose J. Cruz Jr. and wife, Maria, of Carrizo Springs, and David Cruz of Austin; four daughters, Grace Gonzales and husband, Jerry, of Uvalde, Mary Jane Turner and husband, David, of Brackettville, Sonya Cruz of Spofford, and Cynthia Barajas of Kermit; two sisters, Diamantina Peña of Crystal City, and Gloria Rodriguez and husband, Lupe, of Uvalde; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Jose J. Cruz Jr., David Cruz, Jerry Gonzales Jr., Zachary Austin Cruz, Jerry Gonzales, and David Turner. Honorary Pallbearers will be Joshua Turner and Braxton Ogun. A visitation was held yesterday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Brackettville Sunset Funeral Home, and a rosary was recited at 7 p.m.
