
Richard Earl Shurley entered into God’s presence on Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his wife, children, and family. He was the husband of Judith Ann Shurley. They shared over 20 wonderful years together. He was a father to five daughters and five sons-in-law, and grandfather to three grandchildren, who were all blessed by his love, wisdom, and guidance. Richard was born the eldest of two children in Uvalde on Nov. 3, 1946, to Walter Thomas Shurley and Muryle LaVerne Shurley. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education from Texas A&M Kingsville and Master of Science degree from Texas A&I Corpus Christi. He was a professor of automotive mechanics at Del Mar College for over 40 years. Richard was an entrepreneur, mentor, teacher, expert marksmen, archer, gunsmith, craftsman, and fisherman – and more than anything, he was a man of great faith. Richard was also a member of the Grace United Methodist Church. He served as a trustee of the church, Sunday school teacher, leader in the men’s bible study, organizer of the men’s service ministry, and helped in many other ministries. He is survived by beloved wife, Judy Shurley; daughters Belinda Phillips (Bryan Phillips), April Skoruppa, Laura Satrum (Aaron Satrum), Nicki Dooms (Ryan Dooms), Mary Ann Lozano (Omar Lozano); grandchildren Walter Skoruppa, Mark Shurley, and Molly Grace Lozano; sister Sharon Shurley Rose; sister-in-law Patsy Granhold; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Muryle Shurley and father, W. T. Shurley. Funeral services were held yesterday at 11 a.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church, followed by a visitation and luncheon for family and friends.
