Fred Warren Davis Jr. went to Heaven on Jan. 30, 2017, at the age of 81. Fred was born in La Pryor on April 20, 1935. He was the oldest of four children. Freddie, as he was known to friends and family, grew up in the Uvalde, Texas area on ranches his father managed. His life was filled with working around and in the wool industry. Fred graduated from Uvalde High School in 1953, spent a short time at Schreiner University and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1956. He was stationed in Roda, Spain, ran with the bulls in Pamplona (twice!), and served his country well. It was while he was in Spain that he met Maria Vila Davis and married. They returned to Texas after his father’s death to be closer to his mother and their two girls, Grace and Carolyn, were born in Uvalde. The family moved to San Marcos in the early 1970s when Fred took a management position with Bolman Industries, one of three wool scouring plants in the world. In 1980, Fred and two other partners purchased the business and later moved it to San Angelo. Fred moved to San Angelo with the business and later to Colorado. He returned to San Angelo and lived there until the death of his second wife Norma. In 2015, he moved to Kyle into Overlook at Plum Creek. He made many friends in the past two years there. He participated in (the card game) Pokeno, pot luck meals, water aerobics (with his oxygen in tow) and many other events. In his last days, he made a specific request to be where he had so much joy and many wonderful friends. Daddy loved fishing, old time country music, gardening and the outdoors. He suffered most when his illness kept him from these things. He will be remembered for his quick wit, dry sense of humor and caring spirit. He loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchild most. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Warren Davis Sr. and Norma Agnes Gardner Davis; his brother, Dan Davis; and sister, Lillian Davis Montgomery. He is survived by one sister, Helen Hutto and husband, Elby, of Vanderpool; sister-in-law, Margaret Davis of Uvalde; brother-in-law, RL Montgomery of Uvalde; Mary Davis, the mother of his girls, of San Marcos; and many nieces, nephews and cousins across Texas and the country. He is also survived by his daughters, Grace Lillian Davis and Pete Hoyt. Jr of San Marcos and Carolyn Marie Davis McCurdy and Scott McCurdy of Bryan; grandson Scotty McCurdy and wife, Chelsea, of Bryan, and granddaughter Tara McCurdy of Bryan. The light of his life was his great-granddaughter, Harper Jean McCurdy, daughter of Scotty and Chelsea. Her smile melted his heart and kept him with us longer. Harper loved to pinch his oxygen hose and hear it whistle… Daddy never complained. Services will be held at Harrell Funeral Home in Kyle on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017, at 2 p.m. Refreshments to follow services. Interment will be held at a later date in Uvalde at Hillcrest Cemetery.
THE PRECEDING IS A PAID OBITUARY.
